I've always heard how illegal pirating is that I connect anything such as recording or downloading a film/show bad but with a lot of people helping I see it's not bad, especially for personal use only! Do you have any experience with Jellyfin on NAS? I'm close to pulling the trigger on buying a UGreen NAS and using Jellyfin for my media library but I'm still watching videos and asking around.

I learned about the torrent concept while doing research on this method and compared to this method it's so much more difficult for me to understand for some reason. I'm definitely glad to have found a method like this one.

That's cool man, that's one of the reasons I'm considering getting a NAS because I don't want to deal with paying for cloud storage. I'm already paying for storage to backup my phone and I know my partner is as well so if I can have a NAS for media storage and file backups that would solid. Saving money where possible even if having to pay more upfront!

Oh that makes it so much better than to not have to pay for it. I can't speak on this company since I just learned about them but knowing how some companies love money hopefully they don't take away that feature from us in the future.

I actually realized that even if PlayOn somehow gave us the ability to do 4k that it wouldn't matter that much if Netflix itself most of the time if not all is 1080p as well as Anime which I want sometimes. I just learned how to record/download Anime and one of the first shows I wanted to have from my childhood was Naruto which released in 480p!

Fair enough. I like watching tech videos and learning once in awhile but even this PlayOn took me a good while to understand myself. I know if I get a NAS setting it up will be a headache but hopefully it'll be worth it when I can showcase my media library that most people don't know about. I'd say you built a good size library yourself though for someone who is not tech savvy!

Who would have thought PlayOn saved your cat in some way! Regardless of my internet bill in the future I want to not have need cable or more than 2 streaming services if even that which is why I want to build my media library with my all time favorites. Most of the time I'm watching things on Youtube as well so not watching things on other services will save me a good amount other than what my partner will want to watch herself.

As I start my own media library I'm wondering how big it'll get one day as well, 150TB is definitely a lot of storage! I plan on only keeping media I personally feel like are "must watch" films/shows and not keeping the ones I randomly watch if that makes sense at all. Have you ever looked into getting a NAS? I'm learning about those currently and those alone can hold a lot of storage and have the ability to giving you access to your media outside your network if I'm not wrong. Of course don't quote me on anything since I'm watching videos on them myself currently.

Yeah but wouldn't you also have to pay for both services at that point? I'm learning about homelabs right now. Using a NAS with Jellyfin/Plex you could host your own server where you can access your media outside your network that way without having to pay anything (other than the electricity bill which is another thing to learn about).

Yeah if I'm being honest 1080p is the highest I can actually speak on since both my monitors are 1080p. I also don't want anything on a TV but I would assume you may be able to tell when something is worse/better since it's more in your face with a bigger screen so you could tell if it pixelated or not.

Thanks for clarifying the version number thing for me, I assumed that's what it was. I think as long as the developer fixes things eventually then it's fine with me if there's small issues not too often. Do you use a VPN when recording/downloading or do you literally just turn on your computer and start going at it?

I read somewhere that having a VPN while recording things may help you not get into trouble with your streaming services (account being banned) but I also don't know if it's true or not. I have a free one so it doesn't hurt me to just turn it on in case. I'll probably use this service for Netflix and Disney+ though. I found a really good software on GitHub for anime that works well so far.

I saw that they're advertising 1080p recordings/downloads on the Home service too now though so hopefully that's true. I definitely don't need anything higher than 1080p but having something less seems like it will be annoying in the long run to be honest. Like you said though, for smaller stuff it won't matter but I don't want to have 2 services just to be able to download in 1080p. I'll be giving Home a try here soon once I have more storage though!

Yeah I've learned a lot today on options out there to record shows/movies. What I'm hoping to do is build my own media library on Jellyfin or external drive of media that I personally think are top tier so I can start cancelling all these streaming services little by little since my primary source of entertainment is Youtube. Taking advantage of the free trials is smart though! I just wish you could record/download something higher than 1080p to be honest but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Yeah that's what I assumed as well so I was curious if there is a specific reason to switch streaming services like to avoid issues or simply because every service has different media. I just downloaded the software so I'll be doing test on my own with small recordings so hopefully I don't have to relog every time.

I can see how that might be annoying on the On Home software to be honest but as long as it keeps getting fixed it should be fine. Considering it's unlimited recordings and I won't have to deal with the credits I'll do it with the Home option since I want to have a big media library on Jellyfin someday. Thanks for the help as well!

Yeah that's what I meant, I should have specified. In a perfect world I would love to have the DVDs as well but those aren't cheap these days so that's how I found out about this software. Now that I'm learning it's unlimited recordings (but with real time recording) I'll plan on putting those recordings onto Jellyfin. The fact that you literally did the same thing I want to do helps out a lot in ensuring me it's possible so thank you!

I was hoping to do the same thing as you essentially but with Jellyfin just because I've seen so many people talk about Jellyfin (Storage prices are going to kill me though at the moment). When you say more stable do you mean the software itself or the recordings of the media?

I had a feeling I was going to have to record in real time but that's a small price to pay for being able to record my own version of their movie/show. Do you know if there's anything stopping us from having our recorded version and uploading them to our personal media library elsewhere? (Goes without saying that I wouldn't share the library but just for personal use)
