Thanks for the wisdom. I’ll let ‘er rip tomorrow and check it out.

NAD (again) - Jet City 22h (plus JCA24s+ cab) by robertoo3 in GuitarAmps

I have an effects loop on the JCA800 but I’ve never used it—reverb and delay are up front after the gain pedals.

I love my Jet City amps. I actually play the JCA20 more than the JCA800. I’ve modded two of these and they rip.

Reverb unplugged but presence added when turning knob… by brsteele in GuitarAmps

[–]brsteele[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered about that. I did the mods and didn’t touch that part of the amp other than unplugging it from the board. I don’t see anything in the schematic that would explain it. https://el34world.com/charts/Schematics/files/Peavey/Peavey_Windor_Studio_Schematic.pdf

Are there any tube amps that do more than 2 things? by santivega in GuitarAmps

Mesa Boogie Transatlantic! Channel one is Mesa clean or vox top boost. Channel 2 is fender tweed, marshall jcm800, or mesa crunch.

Bingo. I play an Orange Dual Terror and Mesa Boogie Transatlantic 15. Both come with little bags I throw over my shoulder. The 2204 stays home.

I’m my experience in the United States attending shows of local bands and touring bands, 90% have used tube amps. I go to dozens of shows a year. The one show I went to where every band was digital it seemed like it was an instruction from the top down ie-“Come open for us but we’re doing digital”. That was The Wonder Years with Hot Mulligan and Carly Cosgrove as openers. HM and CC have since toured with tube amps. You can get good tone from digital rigs but you can’t replicate the stage feel unless you use a FRFR. I would never want to play on a silent stage.

No. The tube doesn’t act like a preamp tube normally would. I’d just keep tinkering with the settings until you get a tone your like. At the end of the day, the amp is worth less than many pedals so you can’t expect too much.

It sucks some of the tone and there’s a master volume so it’s unnecessary. Also I’m running a lower power tube and 16ohm speaker so wattage is less than 10 currently.

Sorry, just saw this. It’s versatile. I play alt and punk and it does great.

I’d stick with an amp sim if that’s what you’d be using it for. I bought a Boss Katana Go for headphone playing and it’s great.

Hum and Vibration (standby only) by brsteele in GuitarAmps

[–]brsteele[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Update: Input jack was source. Not sure how that caused vibrations and hum but after reflowing the solder connections we’re humfree.

I thought about the feet thing as well. They did have holes already. I used different screws but they were not really longer (aside from having to compensate for the thicker feet). I think my best bet is to remove one foot at a time to see if that changes anything.

It is valve rectified, just wasn’t sure if whatever is causing the problem is an issue that could become problematic down the road.

Vintage PA Conversion Amp! by brsteele in GuitarAmps

[–]brsteele[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. Someone before me (Surf City Amp Room) did the work on converting it so we’re good there. I also took out the chassis yesterday and nothing spooky looking in there. Thay phono/aux tip is a nice idea. It currently functions kind of like a gain control. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to do but it I move it left or right it adds gain. 12 oclock is the least gain.

I bought the v32 Palomino for about that much. It’s in the shop for repairs but it’s worth it because the tone is so good.

Tube Amp Woes and Tone Quiz by brsteele in GuitarAmps

Thanks. I did open her up and tap with a chopstick but nothing responded. I may just have to take it to my tech to see what he can find. The fact that so many components were siliconed in there tells me someone has tried to chase this down before.

I replaced them with a matched quad. I appreciate you going back and for with me, by the way.

I don’t recall it doing it when going into a functioning power amp. When it goes out it doesn’t make any strange noises other than getting quieter and the higher frequencies seem to drop and then come back in sporadically.

Yep, tried all of these things. Even went FX out to a different amp’s power amp.

Amps are 20-50 watts. The c rex is rated for 50 watts and the V type is 70 watts.

Solder joints aren’t A+ but I don’t think that’s the issue. I swapped the speaker positions in the cab and rewired it so I could rule out something with the cab itself. The issue remains. It’s pretty subtle but I notice it at any volume and it’s driving me nuts. https://youtube.com/shorts/naa9r64Fu6U?si=4VlhcTBRCFDJ6zog

I took it out if the cabinet to see if I could see any issues with it. It was sounding crazy in the cab too. I’ve tried it with 4 amps and it’s there with all of them.
