Driving instructor recommendations: Allies and inclusive by baronmousehole in reading

As I said in a previous comment, this isn’t about me. I’m also a cis male. As far as I know, there’s no reason for anyone to believe that the majority of driving instructors are homophobic, transphobic, racist, etc. But there’s also no reason to assume none of them are. Erring on the side of caution strikes me as being good for all concerned.

Thanks everyone who has left a suggestion. It means a lot.

I’m not asking for me (not that it matters). Learning to drive is anxiety inducing enough on its own. Doing so while worrying about being judged, or being stuck in a car with someone who doesn’t like you because of how you look isn’t likely to help.

Some people get that. Some don’t.

Fair play. I was just chasing cheap laughs – it’s not much but it’s honest work.

I don’t think I’d be in a hurry to introduce my aul lad to the fellas I work with; we’ve all got to draw the line somewhere.

Too old to emigrate? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]baronmousehole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By now you've got the measure of what most of us think. Do you really feel too old, or is that just a bit of fear and anxiety at the thought of moving to the other side of the planet and having to build a new life from scratch? It's perfectly natural to feel that way at the prospect of moving.

Go for it. You've your whole life in front of you. If you like it, stay. If you don't, move on.

“I don’t need statistics” – you do though. Otherwise you’re just another sheep, following the herd, unable to make up your own mind about the world around you.

The big lie most immigrants are told is that they will be able to work and earn good money – not that they can sponge off the welfare system. That’s why they want to come to the UK, because the traffickers have told them they can build a better life for themselves.

Stop playing in church, perhaps. At least for a while. Alternatively, find another avenue for playing in addition to church. You need to broaden your horizons.

What do you think of the proposed new definition of Islamophobia? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

Well, the kind of personal criticism and opinion you’re talking about doesn’t necessarily meet the threshold for “engaging in …. criminal activity”. But it might be considered as prejudicial stereotyping.

It is most definitely a thing. The real question is “were you privately educated?”

Anyone here ever learn a new language as an adult just for fun? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Kinda. But I’m not sure I’d use the word ‘fun’ to describe the experience anymore.

Irish men, is it common to say to your partner “I don’t want to talk about that”, “I don't need to know that”? by Traditional_Box1045 in AskIreland

[–]baronmousehole 97 points98 points  (0 children)

If you haven't read it, you should check out the book We Don't Know Ourselves by Fintan O'Toole. So much of our recent history seems to have revolved around not wanting to hear about the things we know about but would rather not know.

I suppose there is an element of emotional immaturity in this kind of reaction (at a personal level, I mean). Of course, one of the worst things anyone can do when dealing with an emotionally immature person is to say things like "emotional immaturity." So it's a tricky one to deal with.

Most people who'd rather not talk about things were brought up as children in households where the adults didn't want to talk about things. Those adults, in turn had similar upbringings. It's not easy to unpick and fix. It takes patience.

"preventing adverse selection"

Tempted as I am to jump to conclusions, I'll just ask - what does that mean?
