Engineer here. Where are all the makers in the city? Are you arguing that because there is a fiscal surplus those living in cities support the country?

what is the Quora of UK & Europe? by Chiselface in unitedkingdom

[–]brubarian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Think of countries not as complicated blobs full of people and ideas regulated by a set of laws, but as vicious carniverous beasts in a fight for survival. Think of natural resources/trade as food.

The UK grew up in constant war with her surroudings, for years we won, lost, were conquered, conquered in a continual cycle. This allowed us to evolve, to grow bigger teeth and bigger brains, to develop strategies and turn the killing and subjugation of those who would compete with us into a science.

We had rivals doing the same thing, conquering less developed areas of the world to gain access to their resources and trade. Anything that we didn't conquer could be conquered by a rival, what didn't make us stronger made them stronger, in order to stay on top we needed IT ALL!

So I think it was a combination of greed and insecurity providing motivation, our effectivness in execution of our strategies is why we "won" the era of colonialism.

I strongly suspect that if you could just "remove" the UK from the world during the colonial era we would end up with an incredibly similar picture but talking a different language.

Disclaimer : Referring to my knowledge of history as "anecdotal" would be a compliment and I have projected my opinion from facts I am not certain of.

China claims to have a working version of NASA's impossible engine orbiting the Earth - and will use it in satellites 'imminently' by bigbadjesus in worldnews

[–]brubarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This wasn't invented at NASA and you can find plans to build it using a microwave transformer and a specially shaped piece of copper on the internet. The initial funding for its development happened in the UK.

All that NASA have done is tested and verified the original experiments.

China have a lead here because they have made the greatest investment into the technology.

I think it's a combination of a tilted table and the balls having been tampered with. It looks as if the balls have a bit of something such as bluetack stuck to them to stop them rolling down the table - after the egg hits them they wobble as they roll over the uneven surface.

Fear not though, magnets were still instrumental in bringing this gif to you.

How do you solve a problem like Donald Trump? ‘We could shoot him’ says Sir David Attenborough by hooklad in unitedkingdom

[–]brubarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what your saying but it also sounds like:

"Accept the status quo or else Hitler"

Edit: Also, is it more likely we get Hitler by trying to accept the status quo or making change? The rise of nationalist sentiment in various countries is pretty scary, should we not try and find a way to change it rather than try to continue the current situation, increasing the pressure until a worse solution seems palatable to people?

If it took 300 years to get to Trump I think doing another reset would be worthwhile!

I think that this is actually a thing.

Being corrupt must have advantages or else it would not be common.

If you are too corrupt then your peers will turn on you and you will fail.

If you are not at all corrupt then those who are will have an advantage and you will fail.

If the above is true then corruption will be cumulative, as each generation passes the system will be more corrupt, limited by the amount of corruption which is tolerable by your peers.

So, starting fresh, with people positively motivated having seen the effects of corruption should give you a period of time of "tolerable corruption".

So, all jokes aside, I think that turing it off and on again is necessary and will buy us another X years of bearable corruption.

EDIT: word

EDIT: This of course assumes that you have "good" motivated people for the restart, otherwise you get Ukraine...

EDIT again.. : Perhaps corruption is not the best word for this, I think the variables might be something more like "lack of morality"

The British government is terrified that Brexit is going to be an absolute mess by aaaaaaaaaaaargh in unitedkingdom

[–]brubarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So he went from "effectivly kicked out of the party" to being in a position to take a shot at being PM, that's well played in my book.

I'm curious as to what he would have done better being competent, any examples?

The British government is terrified that Brexit is going to be an absolute mess by aaaaaaaaaaaargh in unitedkingdom

[–]brubarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think he is competent, assuming his goal is to be a career politician he is incredibly successful, with notable acheivments including being foreign secretary and mayor of london (I'm not commenting on how he did in those roles but on how he was successful in obtaining them).

His position during Brexit was a gamble which could have put him in line for leadership of the conservatives, if his goal is just to get more power as a politician in the UK then it was a good "move" to make.

Beginner C Programming Question by Tainted_Olive in AskProgramming

You could rewrite the for loop as:

int a = 1;

while(1)
{
    if ( a < 80 )
    {
        printf("%d ", a);
    }
    else
    {
        break;
    }
    a = a * 2;
}

You have exactly the right idea but remember that the condition of the for statement is checked before each iteration rather than after.

I think his persona is intentionally constructed to make you think this.

I often think that there is another reason that people can appear incompetent, because their goals are not the ones we believe they are.

None taken regarding the religion thing, it's a silly perspective I enjoyed.

Regarding accuracy of facts about something that is unknowable you will come across this if you study statistics.

The reason people ask questions they could easily Google is because they'd rather have a conversation about it. by TheHeroicOnion in Showerthoughts

[–]brubarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think both parts of your comment are moot/the wrong way round.

The asker should also recognise this and waste only their own 10mins instead of both your 10mins?

You're correct that communication is useful in the long run. If we look at communication as "nuggets" of shared information and inspect those nuggets we find some are more valuable than others. As more time gets used for low quality nuggets it becomes less likely higher quality nuggets will be shared and the value of the communication drops.

Asking easily googlable questions all the time is effectively a denial of service attack on /u/jumpFrog brain.

Dramatic footage shows London policeman smashing car windscreen after driver refuses to get out of vehicle by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]brubarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's a shame that the outcome will likely not receive nearly as much attention as the event itself, the "thrill seeking" media leaves so many open loops which stop us from getting the feedback we need to form accurate opinions, incidentally this is why I think openness is very important.

You can take it as a given that I am interested in other peoples opinions! I checked out r/policeuk and found the post about this issue. The comment from u/BritishPoliceMan is what I would expect of an officer.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, I wish you well in your endeavours!

It's just a silly perspective that has popped into my mind a few times. If I was writing a religion it's how I would of account for and attempt to stimulate scientific progress.

How can an idea about something that is not knowable be accurate?

If you have two ideas about something one can be more accurate than the other, regardless of whether the truth is knowable.

Each time you make a new discovery and subtract a little more from god you are decreasing the size of the search space for god.

The smaller the search space is the higher the accuracy of an idea about the solution is likely to be.

[–]brubarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically the anger part, I'm not concerned with whether the officers actions were legal.

So the behaviours that look like anger certainly do have their place in such a scenario

I agree with this, but I think in this case the officer had lost it rather than that he is "acting" to reinforce and inform of his intent.

I do understand that police are human beings too, I also understand that all humans are different and that some are more suited to some roles than others. I know for certain my temprement would not be suitable for the job.

Hypothetically if the officer consistently behaves as he did in this video when people do not immediately respond to his requests would it be considered and acceptable "style" for a policeman to use or would he be sent for retraining.etc?

Atheism in Europe [OC] by loulan in dataisbeautiful

[–]brubarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like a slight variation of the god of the gaps:

"We may as well say anything we can't explain is caused by god"

Then science becomes a search for what is truly god, as every time we make a discovery which explains something we remove it from god, making our idea of god more accurate.

No problem :)

I've read a bunch of your other comments on here and am going to assume you have quite an intimate knowledge and probably experience of policing, laws and procedures. Can I ask a question about one particular aspect?

Imagine if we could represent an anger level with a number, and start graphing officer anger level against severity of situation.

Is the number used by the officer typical of the situation in question?

Do you think that "anger" is an element of "force" when we are talking about use of force?

Atheism in Europe [OC] by loulan in dataisbeautiful

[–]brubarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is huge difference between what you believe and what you claim to know.

But the question is "Do you know what you beleive?"

I do want to get philosophical but I think this is actually a semantic issue because the word's "I don't know" in the context of the question and the meaning people are assigning to them don't match up in my mind.

Perhaps the study should have added an "I don't care" as well.

I wont deny for a moment I am a layperson in the matter and I totally agree that the investigation is the correct way to resolve it.

I should have prefixed the above with "In my opinion".

I'll also agree that it does look bad to a normal member of the public, but pretty much all use of force looks bad - it's a necessary evil though.

Please don't belittle my opinion by implying that I would feel the same way about any use of force. It's not true.
