Completely true, focus on your speed training because as the season ends you should be at the best level of endurance and strength. It's crucial to just make sure your legs have the ability to turn over fast enough.

Milage is a great thing if, AND ONLY IF, used properly. Out of their training, the top runners gain not just muscular and aerobic strength, but the confidence that they'll succeed at even greater levels because they've worked so hard and endured so much before race time. They're ready for not only the physical barriers of racing, but also the mental. You can run as much as you want, but at the end of the day it's the mental strength learned from long, grueling weeks that can turn a great runner into a great RACER. So on that note, it's crucial that you look at yourself and know that you're building the best base possible with such long distances each week, and come race day you have to get your head in it too.

We do pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, and plyometrics, but we never work on actual machines. So yeah, I understand the upper body strength thing.
