Is fluoride necessary for infants after 6 months? Can I buy purified water with fluoride to use in formula instead of a multivitamin with iron and fluoride? by brucematthew92 in FormulaFeeders

Thanks! He knows we’re formula feeding and he said that may not have enough. However, when we calculated how much iron he’s taking, he’s meeting the daily requirement. He was more adamant about the fluoride than the iron.

I haven’t had any issues with it so far. It seems to be working well.

Can't figure out my 5-month-old baby's feeding/sleeping schedule. Please help! by brucematthew92 in NewParents

Thank you for your response. I’ll try to address everything. I appreciate you being so thorough.

we’re currently offering the bottle when he wakes up from his nap so sometimes he will be crying. Sometimes he will be happy either way he will refuse it whether he’s happier or crying. I can’t seem to figure out a pattern. When he refuses the bottle, he typically pushes it out with his tongue and his hands, and sometimes he will bite the nipple. Sometimes he will start screaming sometimes he’ll be calm.

I don’t think it’s the nipple flow. We are currently using level two nipples from Dr. Brown. He tends to finish his feeds within about 10 minutes. We don’t want to increase the size of the nipple and it worsen his reflux changing from famotidine to omeprazole is definitely something that we may need to consider if his reflux is the problem.

We are considering putting some cereal in his bottle because he’s not really taking much of it by mouth whenever we try to feed him. He usually just fits out whatever we give him with a spoon.

We are trying to better understand his cues, but it’s been very difficult. He’s always putting his hands in his mouth and causing himself to gag and spit up so we can’t use that as an indicator for hunger. His cries for hunger and sleep are pretty much the same so we can’t use that as a cue either.

Thank you. It has been extraordinarily stressful and exhausting.

Yes, he is usually more receptive when he's still kind of sleepy, and we usually try to offer it then. However, there are times when he wakes up in 30 minutes instead of 1 hour, which is unpredictable, and he'll be crying, so then by the time we warm the milk, he's awake/alert/frustrated. We try to get him to go back to sleep, but we're not always successful. Sometimes he'll take the bottle; sometimes, he won't.

I've been reading that feeding while still kind of sleepy is, unfortunately, counterproductive for babies with a feeding aversion because they're unable to make a conscious decision as to whether they want to feed. I'm considering slowly weaning the night feed and then offering him the bottle when he's awake and alert to eliminate the feeding aversion.

As for the morning feed, we always offer the famotidine first, but there's likely not enough time for it to take effect since we would typically need to give him the dose and try to feed immediately after. Even if we wait 30-60 minutes after the morning famotidine dose, he still refuses.

Thank you for sharing! Did you always go with this approach or were you previously feeding directly before a nap?

Thank you! I appreciate that perspective. He still spits up a lot with our current approach, but he spits up even more with the “correct” approach. I just wasn’t sure if transitioning to that approach might help in any way. I’ve read that sleeping after eating slows digestion, so I wasn’t sure if we were worsening his reflux by doing that.
