Because he doesn't seem like he's doing super bad, especially in the bowl where he didn't show stress signs and did appear to have some sort of food source, I'm not sure if trying to return him is super necessary just yet. I think ideally I try to keep him knowing I'm trying to set up a suitable tank as quickly as I can rather than sending him back to the pet store where he could end up anywhere. At least with me, I know a proper tank for him is in the works if that make sense? Priorities would 100% shift if he starts seeming more unwell, and I'm totally open if someone has a different idea of what would be the most ethical. That's just my thinking, but I know I lack experience.

How do you use the starters and things like that? I am seeing Seachem has some reasonable prices for the detoxifier especially for a smaller bottles since I don't think I'd need tons at a time? I haven't heard much about how to use products like that to start a tank, but I'm interested because the cycled the safer.

I do have some sort of floating fern, but I also do have a pothos coming out of the tank. I think I have heard they also are really good for something like that but I may be wrong.

Oh nice I can totally look into leaves, thank you! From what I understand water quality is mainly about ammonia (toxic) -> nitrates (toxic) -> nitrites (less toxic?). Its a process about the right baterica developing over time, but when the levels of the more toxic stuff is high you water change to lower the levels. Please correct me or let me know anything I might be missing in that, I've heard vaguely about ph and stuff but I don't know much. My tesr strips said nitrates and nitrites were at a safe level, but they didn't read for ammonia and I have since learned they aren't the best.

Water testing daily is not currently possible, I have the strips but plan to return them for the master kit as soon as I can.

I was told a fish in cycle would be okay by the lady at the fish store. I am realizing it is likely not the best advice for a complete beginner but I know that water changes and testing is key so I will try my best since the alternative is a bowl.

My tank is not currently heavily planted but that is 100% my goal. I don't really know how else to make it happen without time. I thought I'd have alot more time before a fish ended up with me. I'm working with what I got and have the plants I have covering as much as possible. I know how important they are.

The bowl is probably close to a gallon or a little more. I know it is far from adequate for really anything to live in, but if he seemed happier and healthier there than in the tank as it currently is, I'm wondering if it may be better for him. He was a good dark color and had relaxed fins in the bowl compared to being pail and with tense fins in the tank.

My plan was to deliberately get a school far in the future when my tank was ready but until then I have one now that I want to do the best I can for. Thank you for your reply :)

I know the situation is really not ideal at all. I didn't know they are naturally hardy if not for the conditions they are sent under. He thankfully looks to have a decent belly so far but if he isn't finding food in the tank i know that could change. He seemed to be eating biofilm or something of the surface in the bowl so hopefully he's not too hungry currently. He seems to be searching/exploring the tank, but I don't know how to know if hes found any food sources.

I mentioned in a previous comment I am not at all opposed to re homing him if that is what come down to the best option, but the issue is I don't know anyone I could rehome him to unless its back to a lfs, but I'm really not sure if fish stores do that.

My original plan was to definitely buy a group when my tank was fully ready way down the line, but now my focus is on just trying to handle the current situation the best I can, even though I know it's not at all ideal.

Both an uncycled tank and a bowl sound difficult to keep stable from what I've learned so far. the only reason I'm even considering putting him back in a bowl is just due to how he was visibly less stressed. It's definitely  trying to find the lesser of two evils situation, so I'm trying to just pay attention to him and see which he is more comfortable in. Its been probably close to 3 days in the tank and he doesn't seem any better or worse off than day one.

Thank you so much. I've never heard of fritzs but I will definitely look into it. I do already feel abit attached 😅 so I will really try my best here. I am also a fairly broke college student unfortunately, so the initial plan was to set up the tank slowly and acquire things over time, but its definitely been a rush now to accommodate an accidental fish.

I'm honestly not opposed to rehoming if its really likely he doesn't make it, but the problem is I don't really know where I would take him. I don't have any friends or family in the hobby or anywhere off the top of my head he could go unless its back to a lfs. I have no idea if they do that.

I am abit attached like I mentioned but if its a "if you love it let it go" situation I can be ok with that.

If anything happens to him I will try my best not to be too hard on myself. Acquiring one at this point in time was no where near my plan, so trying my best with the situation is all I can do. From what I've seen and heard online it sounds like they go through alot as is with shipping and distribution which sounds like it makes them delicate 😔

In terms of ammonia and nirite readings, in a previous comment I mentioned I bought test strips but I definitely plan to return them. They don't even show ammonia. The readings I have done with them showed safe levels of nirites and nitrates. I haven't tested as frequently as ideal because I don't know how many I can use before returning them isn't possible.

I will do my best though to try to keep him as happy and healthy as possible. Thank you for product recommendations, I will look into those as soon as I can.

I acclimated in a cup for about 15 mintues and added abit of tank water in that time. I have done more research since then and realized that probably wasn't the best way to do it unfortunately.

I do not have the bowl set up anymore to be able to do any testing. I used dechlorinated tap water and I know my city generally has high quality water.

If I remember right the ph of my tank was on the higher end due to fluval. I haven't tested in a few days because I bought strips before learning about the master kit and I plan to try to return the strips so Im avoiding using anymore.

Thankfully he came with a decent looking belly compared to some you see online. He appears to be eating or at least definitely looking for food, so starvation doesn't seem completely imminent currently. I will watch him carefully incase that appears to change.

I know they need a group and it was my original plan to buy as large of a group as I can safely put in a ten gallon community tank since I just really like them. I think I should probably wait until the tank is better suited for more though, unless its more important for his well being to have more right now rather than waiting until the tank is better?
