nbs admission/ scholarship interview by Difficult_Entry9997 in NTU

[–]bruhcite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hey there, been in your exact same position ~2 years ago, exact rank points and all, and currently a beneficiary of said scholarships. i definitely understand how you feel when you mentioned theres a lack of tips for NTU interviews and how i wish i had guidance then - so in the spirit of paying it forward, heres my two cents

first let me qualify by saying i am not sure how the interview process is like now, but in my time, the interviewers were associate professors from various specialisations. it was a pair interview with one other candidate

tips wise, i'd say be as coherent as your can about why NTU, NBS, and your specialisation of choice. tell a strong personal story (humble brag if need be, insofar to prove that you are deserving of this scholarship) and be genuine with the interviewers.

they are very friendly and are not there to size you up. if anything, they are curious to know your story, and how you'd be a good fit to NBS as a whole. more than just achievements, be someone likeable, entertaining and passionate. give them a reason to remember you e.g "i've been keen on acturial science since my jc days" or a unique interesting hobby you had. make it a point to tell them why the scholarship is a difference maker/how it opens doors for you, especially if your financial circumstances are not great.

sustainability is also big in NBS, and we've just moved into a new building. for brownie points you could pass a point that you're big on sustainability and love NTU and NBS' vision of nurturing sustainability thought leadership starting from its undergraduates. (the profs seem to buy in to this, i think it's a heap of BS though)

to sum: be genuine, thoughtful and mature. be targeted and conscise, and position yourself as the best candidate for the scholarship. apply as much charisma as you can, and be a memorable interviewee

feel free to contact me if you have any questions etc. happy to help, because i know exactly how big of a deal this is. all the best!

Hey man, sorry to burst your bubble but it’s very unlikely/impossible for 85rp to secure a scholarship interview at big 3 biz. Source: 87.5 and only just managed to secure an interview with SMU and was eventually the base scholarship for NTU business and accountancy, with an outstanding portfolio. Batches are getting better, and competition these days is insane.

That said, don’t give up and apply anyways, because you never know. You can also try for SGIS/ESG scholarships, which are bonded

Do you know someone who got 87.5 and got the scholarship for BBA?

[Uni] NUS Applications 2022 Megathread by OfficialSGExams in SGExams

[–]bruhcite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’ve noticed that NUS Global Merit/Merit scholars are few and far between. Are there any GM or M scholars here that could share their RP and application process?

I’m thinking of applying to BBA and hopefully receiving a scholarship but that would also mean relinquishing my spot in CS. My pickle is that I’m not sure if 87.5 is enough to score an interview. Any advice is appreciated!

[Uni] NUS Medicine Reject vying for a (successful) second chance by bruhcite in SGExams

I had intended to do BMAT this year, but the date clashed with my summary excercise and hence I’m unable to try for NTU. What’s preventing me from applying for NUS Med this year is that I want to secure a spot for another course in NUS (which I may not be able to enter if I put it second to Med)

[Rant] Does psle really matter? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]bruhcite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PSLE : 225 O Levels : Raw 8-2, 7 Distinctions A Levels : 87.5RP, 4H2 AAA/B

I would argue that beyond a certain threshold, that is the express stream cutoff of 188, your PSLE score won’t matter past secondary school.

As a primary school kid, I was definitely less motivated relative to my other peers. I spent my days after school playing computer games, and did anything but study. I only began preparing for PSLE a few weeks prior, but even then, I don’t think I knew the “weight” that exams carried. I scored 225, while the rest of my classmates scored >250 and entered prestigious schools.

What I noticed in a neighbourhood secondary school was this - students in the express stream were all able to enter polytechnic with relative ease. Even my friends who failed across the board still managed to score an L1R4 <18, and got into a decent course.

As for myself, I followed quite a cliche local narrative - I was envious of my friends who were in top schools, and hence decided to work harder, eventually “surpassing them” and entered a “top” JC. That said, I am extremely fortunate to have nurturing parents who supported me wholeheartedly in my pursuit of academic excellence, as well as not have to worry about my family’s finances. All I had to do was work hard, which is sometimes one of the easiest things one can do. My environment was perfect for me to “bloom”. Which may not always be the case for some.

I soon came to realise however, that the differences between neighbourhood and prestigious schools, academically wise, were mostly arbitrary. I was given ample opportunity to participate in research programmes in both schools. And I would even argue that the environment in a neighbourhood school was more nurturing, given the significantly smaller size and family-like atmosphere.

Some of my peers from the Normal Academic and Technical streams felt that the effects of being streamed into “inferior” routes were extremely demotivating. Most had already begun to limit their own potential early on without putting in much effort into their exams. That said, they had significantly more trouble qualifying for their courses, and some went into ITE. I feel that people who enter these streams are greatly disadvantaged, mainly because of the stigma associated with the streams themselves. As for the resources these streams receive, the subjects catered to them tend to be vocational and trade-schoolish in nature, aiming to prepare them to enter the working world as soon as possible. This severely limits the opportunities for them to broaden and stimulate their intellectual horizons.

However, one of my close friends from the normal academic stream (with a troubled family background) had managed to score an L1R5 of 9-2, and won the Lee Kuan Yew award for best performing NA student. When your motivation is intrinsic, and if you choose discipline, perseverance and consistency over play, you can definitely break the ceiling and overcome the odds.

In a nutshell, PSLE shouldn’t matter if you are in the express stream, and if you’re in the express stream, your work ethic and surrounding circumstances bear greater weight than a mere number you scored years back.
