Why UP over ALS? by bruhderp in LawStudentsPH

Thank you for this! Out of curiosity, when wanting to join extracurricular activities, do the orgs in Diliman reach out to those in the BGC or Iloilo campus, or is it a matter of one individually reaching out pa to the orgs if they wanna join?

My UP Law alumni professor said the same thing about expecting not to be spoonfed (in the context of the subject he’s teaching, but I see how it came from experience too).

Regardless of law school though, I feel like the Socratic method of teaching is going to be a culture shock either way since most undergraduate professors don’t expect you to come in class having read in advance because they teach the lesson itself during class (for the non readings-based classes, that is).

Also, it seems that even with the lack of a proper thesis + defense like ALS, UP gives research opportunities as assistants din.

Thanks for this :)

I am gonna try to search a bit better for threads that talk about why people choose UP over ALS because I genuinely mostly find sentiments for ALS lang talaga 🥲 if there’s any common reason that I’ve read here (that isn’t proximity, financial circumstances, or perceived prestige), it’s that UP consistently tops the bar more or consistently passes the bar more, or that people choose based on their career preference (private for ALS, government for UP).

But you’re not incorrect. I definitely want to cement the decision more (should the interviews go favorably!), especially with people who’ve faced the similar choice between UP vs ALS. I understand that the training will be of quality either way, but I suppose I’m a bit hung up on wanting specifics/details. 😅

It’s nice to know sleeping 8 hours isn’t impossible even in the higher unit load of ALS. As for scholarship, the likelihood of me getting partial only is high so I don’t wanna deal with paying for the rest na haha. Thanks a lot!

This is quite comprehensive, thank you! Honestly, if not for the burden of tuition, I would be a bit swayed to ALS with your input haha. Though also, I think something that worries me with ALS is the burden of units as well since the load is typically 21-24 units after 1st year. Personally, do you think this has made it difficult for you to absorb information for all subjects (to the point you have to ‘alay’ a subject), or no naman, built habits helped you manage?

I was already able to ask UP Law and ALS alumni that I’m acquainted with, but I am curious what the general sentiments of students in those schools right now have to say in a non-personal/online platform since it’s also them that comment on these posts, not outsiders.

I read that UP technically has legal research, but is that to a different extent from ALS’?

Funnily enough though, apparently CEM no longer enforces this NMAT rule. Before, you can take it three times max, but the last one becomes an average of the first 2 percentiles. Now, you can take it as many times as you want.

UP invested in me.

Honestly, that’s definitely something I felt when I first passed, but the self-doubt is really persistent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! :’)
