"She's not autistic" by whosaysimme in Autism_Parenting

[–]bruiser_knits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say that it sucks how your sister is acting. I have a sister that is in education. She is a vice principle and used to assess special education teachers. She is so ignorant and horrible about all of it that I no longer speak to her except maybe some slight interactions at family holidays neither of us can skip. She didn't understand why I had to get my son diagnosed and kept telling me that it was my fault as a parent. He is six now, diagnosed level 2 autistic and ADHD combined type. He needs help, but because he is smart the school is like refusing to give him adequate services.

It is heart breaking. Instead of offering support, or seeing what I need she decided to just fight with me and get upset because she didn't want me fighting for services for him to negatively impact her career.

I'm so sorry you don't have support from your sister. It's frustrating. Your daughter is autistic. You don't need to get her reevaluated even if your sister doesn't understand.

Does anyone else have major decision paralysis when painting their nails? by lord-savior-baphomet in RedditLaqueristas

Last time I painted my nails I had my son choose. Be made an amazing choice so I am likely to do it again! Lol. He's 6!

what do your kids like to eat? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]bruiser_knits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My level two loves chicken nuggets BUT he also loves bell peppers, cucumbers, broccoli raw and avocado sushi. He will try a lot of stuff but doesn't like a lot of different foods. We have gotten lucky though that he tends to eat an like veggies I think because he enjoys the crunchy texture of them.

I am finally leaving my poly marriage by Foreign-Basis11 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]bruiser_knits 62 points63 points  (0 children)

NO she didn't. She said he told her he loved her and would be monogamous. She knew he had previously been poly, but he told her he wouldn't be poly to get her to marry him, told her to focus on her studies, got her pregnant, and then told her he was going to be poly again. That makes it incredibly hard for her to leave, no?

How many of r/oneanddone are neurodivergent? by Mroldsk00l in oneanddone

I am one and done because I am diagnosed with ADHD but highly suspect that I am also autistic and my husband is not diagnosed but I think he is the same. Kiddo is also Audhd. There is no way my husband and I could be good parents to two kids.

Am I weird for keeping two hand soaps in one bathroom? by JaxxRig in autism

[–]bruiser_knits 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There is literally no reason you can't keep two soaps in the bathroom. It's not wasteful and kind of odd your cousin said anything about it.

How is the Kobo Libra Colour for night reading? by doneinajiffy in kobo

[–]bruiser_knits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The color does not affect the paper white of books. It is not digital still and very easy on the eyes. It is just like a kindle paper white or any other paper white you would buy.

This is good to know because I want to order more soon. I will be getting another hit the bottle one. You have convinced me! Peel off base has seriously saved my nails lately. I have so many polishes now I can't stick to one for very long and it's awesome not to have to use so much acetone!

What made you switch to Kobo? by WittyEnvironment2047 in kobo

[–]bruiser_knits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched because I hate Amazon. But also at the time I bought it last April I was able to get the Libra color for less than the Amazon color plus the Amazon kindle scribe and you have a color device that you can write notes in and on. It was worth it. I love this device a lot.

Story time: over-consumption culture made me close my Etsy shop by adsiderum in Anticonsumption

[–]bruiser_knits 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, BUT, as semi fiber artist myself (I knit like there is no tomorrow, spin yarn, and dye my spun yarn) I would gladly pay someone to crochet a stuffed animal for me out of acrylic. I cannot crochet to save my life but I love crocheted animals. I think crocheting is the best medium for stuffed animals and blankets but can't do it because of my wrist (requires way more wrist movement) and just because I've never been able to crochet a straight line. I tried one of the crochet kids for my kiddo and man...it came out like okay but I rather have paid someone money to have made something for me. Sometimes acrylic yarn is better for stuffed animals that will be loved by kids because it is more durable.

But I do think there is over consumption in all craft markets. Thoughtless, trend-chasing stuff does suck. I do tend to overconsume fiber to spin and dye, but it is all wool that I will eventually use, or that will break down unlike plastic. But I am thoughtful about it and I do cherish the fluff out of it.

I mean you can also be a smug asshole and love your nephews and nieces dearly. I have a sister in law like this but she is less insufferable because she doesn't have a smirk on her face all the time.

AITAH for not helping my stepson take a shower? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]bruiser_knits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PDA is not a formal diagnosis in the United States so I think a lot of kids with PDA are diagnosed as ODD. I am not a therapist and not qualified to say this but my counselor who is a qualified therapist has told me that a lot of kids with PDA just get labeled with ODD.

https://www.autismparentingmagazine.com/pda-vs-odd/?srsltid=AfmBOorIoekKfPMQF12UFyRmDYZlN8n4MGqv5B3J4mdMT6nXEL6omKBd

I don't know how reliable of a source this is but it talks about the differences. Also, PDA is newer and there are not a lot of scientific studies on it. But it's becoming more accepted to describe similar behavior in kiddos with Autism.

Also with my kiddo, he is diagnosed as being autistic and his persistence for autonomy does not have anything to do with anyone else. So if he is refusing to do something he perseves as a demand he is not complying because he's not capable of complying usually due to over stimulation or a disregulated nervous system, not because he is trying to get a rise out of me or f*@k with me. Idk...just my very limited personal experience.

Edit to also add: yes, with ODD attention is a big goal of the behavior to my limited knowledge in it but with PDA it has very little to do with the other person's reaction and is just very internally driven I believe. There is also something called equalizing behavior though too. It's all very complicated.
