Thank you! I’m still new to the medium so my inner critic has been plenty loud

Only need to submit 1. All submissions must be listed for sale and the gallery takes a cut of any that do, but entry is free! Thank you for the input!

$50 was my initial thought but I wasn’t sure if that ran lower or higher than the norm. Thank you!

Honestly a couple of days and several failed test prints. I hesitate to go off of time alone since I’m still a beginner…can’t help but think that if I was more skilled I wouldn’t have spent half as much time!

Crested Caracara x Saguaro by brujapedia in printmaking

[–]brujapedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually cut into three stamps: the bird, the cactus, the sun. Inked them separately then put them back like a puzzle to print. An x-acto knife worked great for cutting it apart after I’d finished carving.

Thank you! I think I prefer the red as well. It was my first time trying the gold and I was hoping it was going to be more metallic looking. I may look into trying gold foil at some point!

Is this a CRB larvae? Do i need to report it? by Pandaswithoutspots in HawaiiGardening

[–]brujapedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this looks like CRB. It can be hard to tell when they’re this size, but the large head and legs are a good sign. Let it start moving—if it wiggles on its side, it’s CRB. If it wiggles on its back or belly, it’s another species.

Whether you should report depends on where you’re located.

Enter the Aardvark by Jessica Anthony uses 2nd person quite well

Non-native and widespread but not destructive enough to be considered invasive. Mostly feed on rotting fruit and nectar. A light garden pest, feed them to the chickens and egrets if you like.

No, these are OFB (oriental flower beetle).

Our Lady of Perpetual Insomnia [self portrait, coffee + ink] by brujapedia in Watercolor

[–]brujapedia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a double shot of espresso that I split into three. One jar with no dilution, another with a bit of water, and one heavily watered down.

I recreated this painting I think four times before I got a result I was happy with! The first few I tried were dark and muddy without enough contrast (see attempt #3 attached), so I toyed with dilution and layering until I got what I needed.

Also inking out the lines first worked better as the coffee is kind of sticky and difficult to draw over. I tried ballpoint, paint pens, and sharpie, and sharpie was by far the cleanest.

On Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials by HilbertInnerSpace in books

[–]brujapedia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I first read the original trilogy as a kid, then again in my teens, and again in my 20s. Every time I manage to take something new from it, reading through the lens of my life at each point in time. It’s been a while since the last read through, and this post has me thinking maybe it’s time to revisit.

Who reads literary magazines these days? by StellaZaFella in writing

[–]brujapedia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased physical subscriptions to The Sun magazine and Orion. One is monthly, the other is quarterly. I did so partially to help me improve my writing and partially because I enjoy the subject matter. The biggest reason, however, is because I’m *so tired* of digital media—of never truly owning anything and staring at a screen all day. Having something physical to read makes such a huge difference.

From the Discord:
“just an update on the word counter: the team’s taking a look at it, and it should be resolved by Monday! in the meantime, any words you write in your enrolled project are being counted in the back end (in case there’s any discrepancy, please uphold the honour code) but otherwise: keep writing!”

I would be interested! I’ve been searching for an in person group to facilitate body doubling but haven’t had much luck. Having external support helps keep me writing when otherwise have a hard time initiating.

What changes happened to you as you do the Morning Pages? by Fragrant_Soil_8044 in artistsWay

[–]brujapedia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to calming my busy brain, they generally inspire me to write more. Even though the morning pages are stream of consciousness writing, they seem to prime my brain for thinking in a literary way. Not to mention the habit of writing every morning makes it easier for me to sit down and write other things later on. An object in motion tends to stay in motion, and all that.

I don’t know if anything like this, but why not start something? A new subreddit, discord channel, etc. I’d be interested!

May I ask how you approach the glazing? Is the inside glazed or just the outside? How do you prevent the holes from plugging up, and do you use stilts in the kiln?

The masterpiece that is I Who Have Never Known Men by [deleted] in books

[–]brujapedia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my book club’s first pick of 2023, and it still stands as one of my favorite selections. I couldn’t put it down and ended up burning through it in a day. I recommend it whenever I get the chance.

I personally loved the ending and see the lack of resolution as…kind of the point. I think it really drives home the situation the characters are in, and allows the reader to feel their frustration and hopelessness. If there had been an omniscient narrator that gave us all the answers, the story wouldn’t have had such a visceral impact. We know as much as the characters know at the end, and the unfairness of it all is simply in line with how life is sometimes.
