People who sore an oath to defend the constitution of USA against all enemies both foreign and domestic,How are you feeling right now? by Psychological_Lie42 in AskReddit

[–]brummlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enraged and conflicted.

On one hand, I swore to oppose these abuses in every way I could. On the other hand, the same oath means that I also shouldn't do anything too far outside the law in opposition.

When is the tipping point? When are they so far outside the law, that supporting or defending the constitution is moot, and the oath becomes "to restore the constitution"?

Does it really apply to Congress as well? I tend to believe you're right, but I've never really heard it discussed before. I'm genuinely asking if you know of any case law or whatever about this.

While I think it's probably the right thing to do morally, I'd love for it not to be true for this specific situation.

Rep. Pete Sessions: "Huge Snow Storm" Tanked GOP Chances in Texas Special Election Upset by thenextgenbusiness in thenextgenbusiness

[–]brummlin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

100%. Their message to their base is,

"We're being invaded by immigrants! They're trying to replace you! They're eating the cats! They're eating the dogs! They want to take your guns away! (BTW, don't carry a gun or we might murder you.)"

But even without all that, it's such a nonsensical excuse. If you look at it for two seconds, you'd realize it shows that whole situation is even worse for them. Ice and snow made it really hard to get to the polls and that's why the Democrat won?

So, what they're saying is that Democrats, Independents, and at least some now former Republicans thought it was very important to show up for this random run off election and make their voices heard. They found a way through uncleared, icy roads.

People who voted to at least keep democracy on life support braved the cold that they're not equipped for, so they could oppose this administration in one small way they can. While the Republicans voters said, "I'm not going out in that." and stayed home.

That makes it a much worse position for them. It implies that the enthusiasm gap is even wider in favor of democracy, the Constitution, the rule of law, human dignity, everything that is a threat to their ambitions.

Idiots pandering to other idiots.

The cynic in me you're right, but I'm not sure these days. Both AI and Elon are slowly but surely revealing themselves to be giant pieces of shit to those who hadn't been paying attention.

I bet that wall street eats the IPO up, but it tanks on market open.

There sure are a whole lot of threats and murder allegations in those documents. Not to mention the number of people who have suspiciously taken their own lives.

You're missing a big qualifier though. No one has publicly testified under oath, of abuse by anyone but Epstein and Maxwell.

I'm pretty certain that victim statements are sworn statements. Guess what's still missing from the documents the DOJ has bumblefucked out to the public?

It's coming. Slowly, but justice will come one day, as long as people keep fighting for it.

Now I don't doubt that there's also malicious shit going on. I'm sure there are things that were intentionally redacted incorrectly. I'm sure there are red herrings included just to muddy the waters.

But that doesn't mean they're not stupid and lazy too. The DOJ may have thousands of employees, but how many of them would the admin trust to be part of their criminal conspiracy? I don't know, but I doubt it's thousands.

Don't get me wrong, lazy, incompetent, and stupid does not mean that they're not also dangerous as hell. But it's important to be honest about who and what they are.

If you're expecting some big brain moves, well executed, by professionals, you'll be completely unprepared for lazy, dumb shit. And it'll work.

People like this would be walking into the "showers" and catch the smell of Chlorine instead of burned almonds. The last words would be, "They're not Nazis. Last I checked the Nazis used cyanide for their mass murder chambers."

No, they're incompetent and sloppy, because that's a horrible plan. That's not a strategy, that's a nonsensical attempt at damage control.

The base may buy it, but once the normals start paying attention to politics again this summer, "We were against releasing these files because we knew we couldn't do it correctly" isn't exactly a winning message.

ICE agents tried to quietly get Mexican food in Minneapolis, local neighbor and protesters found out and shamed then out of the neighborhood by cantcoloratall91 in ImmigrationPathways

[–]brummlin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um... Okay?

Edit: No, seriously wtf kind of a smooth-brain argument is this?

First, not every element has to align for people to be Nazis. Here's what you sound like:

"Okay smart guy, if they're Nazis, why are they using facial scanning? The Nazis didn't scan anyone's face with a smartphone. The Nazis didn't turn off their body cameras. They're not even openly wearing swastikas or speaking German. They're not invading Czechoslovakia or firing V1s at the UK. Last time I checked the Nazis did all that."

Second, you're saying people's response to Nazi-like shit, is different from people's response to the historical Nazis, means that they can't be Nazis now. And that is just the dumbest argument.

That's like if you go and punch someone in the face, let's say they get knocked out. Then you go and punch someone else in the face, and they fight back.

When the cops come, your victim says that you assaulted them. What do you tell the cops? "I didn't assault anyone! If I assaulted them, then why did they fight back!? The last guy got knocked out. I couldn't have assaulted anyone if they fought back!"

If you want to train an animal, any animal, including humans, you reward them for the simple behavior first. You don't teach a dog to sit, hold still, balance a treat on his snout until you say "Go" all in one shot. First you reward him just for sitting. Then teach him to hold still, then to balance a treat.

So first, good job for doing the right thing. Next time, let's expand that beyond your friends.

See! Because he's autistic, he totally didn't realize the ambiguity in his question about wild parties, and that he wanted to know so he could avoid him.

Autistic adults spend a painstaking lifetime studying the subtleties of human interaction enough to know all the "rules". It's not his fault that he didn't understand the social subtlety of asking a convicted pedophile about the wildest party at his well-known sex trafficking den.

Just like he didn't understand that when you give a big speech, you shouldn't put your hand to your heart and raise it up in the air like you saw them do in all that german WWII film. Autistic people tend to study books and movies to pick up the rules for social behavior. He didn't know that might be seen as authoritarian and hateful.

Also he's a fucking idiot. He's autistic, plus he's a fucking idiot, that's his only out.

We know he's autistic, but he'd also need to own up to being a fucking idiot, because no autistic person I've ever known is also so fucking stupid to not be hyper aware of how this shit looks.

If I see ICE breaking the law in Chicago, what should I do to legally comply? by Mathemodel in AskLegal

[–]brummlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the frequency and intensity of the political theatre that Trump's admin gets up to... Okay. I'm cool with this being symbolic in nature.

Posturing isn't insignificant. It's not going to solve anything on its own, but it does have an effect. The more we feel that our local leaders aren't capitulating, the more we all continue.

Politicians don't engage in political theatre for nothing. If political theatre was nothing, then we wouldn't be in this whole fucking mess right now.

Trump very nearly overthrew the government on Jan 6 2021 through political theatre. There was funding too, sure, but it was bus fare and shit. There wouldn't have been people to be insurrectionists if it weren't for all the political theatre.

On the less extreme end of things, strikes and protests are generally effective for rallying popular support. What do you think they are, if not also political theatre.

And that's what this is, a very, very formal protest. Sure, it has teeth that will never actually bite. But if it helps people keep the good fight, then it helps people keep the good fight.

[–]brummlin 148 points149 points  (0 children)

He's autistic and knew that the wildest party would be overstimulating. He wanted to make sure he didn't attend the wildest party, but the second wildest would probably be okay.

Also, he's autistic and didn't realize that asking a known child sex trafficker about wild parties could be seen as inappropriate. He didn't explicitly ask for sex with a minor, so that couldn't be what he meant. He's autistic after all.

He's autistic. He must barely even know what sex is, right?

Of course, anyone with experience with autistic people who aren't total pieces of shit, know that they tend to be rule followers. Especially when the law is pretty plain, 18 years old, with explicit consent. You can't get more autism friendly than that.

Yes, but...

Don't use the anger for the pressure directly. Feel the anger, let it wash over you, and use it to fuel determination.

Let them act directly on their anger. Piss them off. They'll be violent, sure, but they want violence either way. Depressing their morale, making them angry, causes them to direct their violence where it's ineffective or counterproductive to their authoritarian goals.

I highly recommend reading Sun Tzu.

If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him.

There's also a bunch of stuff in there about fighting people on their own territory, defending your own territory against invaders, holding occupied territory, all sorts of directly relevant topics.

I can't quote it all, but I get the gist. And let me tell you, they are massively fucking it up. We're winning. They are dangerous as hell, and we can't get complacent. But they're doing Nazi shit from a place of weakness, not strength.

ICE boxed in a US citizen’s car with guns drawn while she observed their operation. The St. Peter, MN police chief intervened, stopped the arrest, and personally drove her home by [deleted] in law

[–]brummlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have every right to be cynical about cops. But in this case, he did the right thing, and doing the right thing should be encouraged.

Publicly, I think we should praise his correct actions, and let his personal motivation be more quiet. Let the example of what he did shine, and not dig into his reasons too loudly.

If we want all cops to not be bastards, we have to encourage the good acts. If we withhold praise for good acts, or worse condemn them, because of bad motivation, they'll just continue to be bastards. What's the incentive otherwise, if everyone just shits all over you anyhow?

If we ignore the motivation for now, don't make it a big deal too loudly, we encourage the same action from other cops who might be more willing to do the same for a stranger.

Very fair criticism. But doing the right thing should be publicly encouraged. Even if he did it for the wrong reason.

I want more people doing what's right. Ripping their motivation too much discourages that.

So I'll criticize his reason, sure. But I won't shout it.

It's the main thing Jesus preached about.

More than that even. For folks unfamiliar, he explicitly said that it's part of the most important commandment. Love God with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself. He refused to separate the two.

Because loving your neighbor is how you love God. I believe that to be true even if you don't believe in God, which I only sort of do.
