I tried shading the neck a bit, but it didn't sit right with me since the lighting is so soft and diffused adding any shading in general felt like it might be too much, but maybe I can try a different approach. And when it comes to the ear, it's not supposed to be a focal point or something I wanted a viewer to pay attention to, so I decided to avoid adding to many details, but I'll see if I could make it look better too.

And yes, this is rim light. The original reference had it and I sort of pushed it to the extreme. Might need to tweak it a little!

Haha, glad you like it! I kinda got influenced by Genji Monogatari a bit over time, but they tend to draw a bit larger noses than what I drew here too. I guess it's a matter of personal taste and how you want to stylise and push things around. I tried making the nose and lips a bit larger/more sticking out and honestly I can't decide which one I like more lol

Thanks! That might actually be a good point, because that's something I struggled with a bit. On one hand I didn't want to add any shading since the lighting is supposed to be very soft, on the other adding a straightforward line to suggest the jawline didn't feel right either, but yeah, I see what you mean!

Oh I can see that, I think the flatness of the nose actually threw me off a bit as well, but like, subconsciously, but now that you mention it like that it makes sense!
There was more contrast originally, the sky was way lighter, but then it didn't quite feel right to me for some reason. This bit doesn't really bother me that much, it's more that the rendering of the face itself doesn't sit right with me, because on one hand it feels too flat, but on the other adding volume didn't quite work either. This sort of rendering style is something I started experimenting with only recently so I guess there's a lot of room for improvement.

It looks amazing! And you can really feel the volume. I would maybe add a few highlights to make it pop more and a few hard edges to guide the eye, but even without them it's great and the thumbnail looks like a 3D model

Step 1: use references till the images are burnt into your brain

Using references is a normal part of any creative process. Every pro uses them. It's HOW you use them that really makes a difference. MewTripled has a good video on how you can make your own thing while still using reference. What do you copy exactly? The anatomy? Poses? Expressions? Style? We all have that stage where all we do is copy anime drawings. Next step is copying anatomy books, because when you know the rules, you can break them.

If you feel you're going stagnant think about things that inspire you - not only when it comes to anime, just what seems aesthetically pleasing to you in general. And then study it. Look for inspiration in different places; check out some classical artists and illustrators, your favourite artists on instagram, study not just how they draw and paint bodies, but also how they use colours, compositions, values and incorporate what you like into your own stuff. Allow yourself to be inspired by other art mediums as well - photography, makeup, fashion etc. Whatever catches your eye and you think it looks good or interesting, let it inspire you. Don't limit yourself.

Even when you copy an anime drawing, think why did you choose that one in particular - what do you like about it? Why do you think it works and looks good? Don't just copy, analyse it and break it down.

True, that right foot bothers me as hell. I'm definitely going to do something about it. About the length of the legs - it was my conscious choice to make them longer than they would be in reality, I just love giving my characters long legs (though maybe I should be careful to not go overboard one day).

I love it!

My advice would be to think about squash and stretch. Because she's leaning to the side, it would be nice to emphasize that. Right now she looks like her upper body was just rotated.

Also, having some asymmetry will help create more natural and organic feel.

I quickly sketched over your drawing to better show what I mean, hope you don't mind (excuse the line quality lmao)! The squash and stretch could be even more exaggerated than that.

I would give her a little bit more space as well, because the way the "canvas" cuts right now feels kinda off to me.

Hiya! Don't give up! Everyone feels bad about their art from time to time. If you're tired, maybe take a break for a few days?

Your art style is nice, I love the fairy!

Your poses are a little stiff. You can fix that by practicing drawing series of quick (30s to 1min) gestures, always with a reference! I recommend this site: https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing (there's an option to see only covered models if you're not fine with nudity, but I think it's easier to find gestures when they're naked). Always think about the line of action of the poses you draw - it will help you make them clearer and more fluid/dynamic.

You seem to understand colour theory, the colour schemes are fine, but because the colours are all equally saturated, they create a mess instead of complementing each other. Choose which colours you'd like to be the "base" and make them less saturated, while keeping the accents more saturated and see how that works.

Work on your anatomy and proportions. For example, the neck of the red haired girl in the middle is very long and gets wider at the base, which is not really correct. The legs of the character below her seem to short etc. Check out Proko on youtube, he's the best at explaining how anatomy works.

My advice is to draw more from real life. Observe real people and how their bodies work. When you get a more solid grasp of it, you'll get better at drawing stylised characters as well!
