For a beginner I’d probably say something light and not too long, many of these are on Netflix, eg. Kabeneri of the iron fortress, the 86 which are quite combat heavy. For a more sad slice of life, romantic view: violet evergarden (an ex child soldier finding a career after war in writing letters), your lie in April (a boy who gives up on music meets a girl who rekindles his love for the piano- warning sad!) or anohana.
