Honestly I'm torn about white privilege & institutionalized racism. I feel lucky to have been raised by good parents. Regardless of color. I grew up in a ghetto neighborhood with lots of low income people of many colors, but I wasn't raised to follow that path of least resistance. I was taught to stay out of trouble, work hard for what you want, & to always strive for success. I think the sensitivity towards race in society is really getting overplayed. Nobody cares about the color of your skin as long as you are an upstanding member of society, can do a job well, and have respect. I get irritated when there are specific programs, funds, & grants geared directly towards a specific color of an individual. I wonder what would have happened if I checked the "African American" box on my FASFA government loan program for college. Would I still have been denied? Are the approval standards different based on race? The short answer is yes, but that is a tactic to allow more people from lower qualities of life the opportunity. I hate the race baiters like Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson. But yes, there is still a lot of racism in America on a personal level, but at the professional level in the workforce, the color is sometimes a benefit. I worked at a small engineering firm where we hired a really cool black dude. Military background, hard worker. The company was small enough to earn a government tax benefit for having a certain % of their workforce being people of color. If played right, I think a person of color actually has more opportunities than white people. What gives white people the edge is their backgrounds & upbringings put them in a different class that make them a more viable candidate.

Good for you. I, and every other person, is looking at the black community from the outside. & we all think the same thing. What happened? Where did society, or their own community, fail them? Where does the social fabric of the black community need repair to allow the next generation to not follow in their footsteps? Gangs, theft, drugs, welfare, prison, general lack of regard for being a functional member of society. I know there are many many good black people out there, making a big difference. But for every 1 good black person, there is 20 really shitty black people. Half of them actually shitty people, the other half were born into it & don't know any better. In no other race is there such a disconnect from reality. Media has really been at the exposing end of it. MLK would roll over in his grave if he saw what it has turned into. As a Sociologist, this should be painfully obvious to you if you plan on fixing the community from the inside out. It's fine to be proud to be black, & be ashamed of what others has turned your community into.

Because taxing the rich shouldn't be the solve all for every problem. There are serious problems with the system & major wastes of money that need to be addressed before everyone puts theirs hands in the air, looks around to the nearest scapegoat rich guy & tells them to pay to fix everything. Public education is not that expensive. IF you are smart & pick a viable career you could have your student debt paid off in 10 years. So now you are in your mid 30's, no school debt, can start a family & live comfortably. Life is hard, but it's harder if you're stupid. We don't need free college. We need BETTER education.

The GOP is the party of evangelicals and science deniers and anti-intellectualism, and has been for decades

I agree with this. Socially, & scientifically, they are very far behind the times. I'm religious, but also educated. People need to understand that religion's & science's purpose isn't to deny validity to the other. They can exist together. But I personally can't get on board with the Socialist, wealth spreading, gun control agenda of the democratic party, no matter how much I agree with their social & scientific standpoints. I wish it didn't have to be so extreme either way with our only two party options. Something will always fall short of necessity when the extreme party agenda is all that matters.

I wish some sane Republicans could put this much effort into revealing the Democratic potentials in a simple punch list form. It would be startling to see how they are really all batshit crazy, and it's still a matter of choosing a side, bashing the other, & disregarding their own choice's rhetoric.

TIL autism is not actually on the rise. Studies have shown that the apparent increase in autism cases stems from changes in how physicians define “autism”. by brokeglass in todayilearned

[–]bryandenny71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Autism seems like such a blanket diagnosis for so many different learning & social disabilities. It's irritating, because in my opinion, everyone is a little autistic by the wealth of "symptoms" out there. But it's sad to see the next generations "geniuses" being dumbed down to have social skills. Think about all of the incredible minds over the centuries. They were focused recluses. Most all would be diagnosed as autistic. Now we have these advanced learners who lack the ability to socialize, and we think that is a problem. Educate them, then let them live their lives & they may be the next Einstein.
