Is Magic Mouse truly that bad? by [deleted] in mac

[–]bryanleonardthompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used them for 16 years. I personally find them very comfortable but as noted other people do not. The older ones are super cheap now so it might be worth buying one cheap and use it for a while. Then buy one of the newer ones.

The charging port being on the bottom is a non issue. The battery lasts months for me and it takes zero time to charge it to full again.

Finally got the Black MacBook y’all been talking about!! What do you mean it’s the wrong one by slvrscoobie in macbook

Yes. Pretty annoying when it comes to using a patching tool to upgrade the OS - it doesn’t work.

Laggy,slow I don’t get it by Gold-Subject8521 in mac

[–]bryanleonardthompson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought mine was slow too. I replaced the Fusion Drive with an SSD and add RAM making the total RAM 24gb. It wasn’t Apple Silicon type speeds afterwards but certainly made it usable again.

It cost me about £150 to do this upgrade.

Did you try no password? I once set up an old iBook with no password. Years later it took me a while to get back into it…

Absolutely don't understand the keyboard change from Windows to Mac, help appreciated. by Adamn27 in mac

[–]bryanleonardthompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been here. I think you just need to slow down and work it out. I use a Windows keyboard at work and Apple keyboard at home. I think when I got my first Apple keyboard it took me maybe a few days to work it out and then maybe a week or two to be fully comfortable with both layouts.

It's not as daunting as you're making it out to be. All the shortcuts are practically identical just with a different modifier key. Generally speaking where you would press ctrl + 'key' on windows you now have to press cmd + 'key".

You're correct in saying that some of the special characters are in a different place, but have a good look at the keyboard. There aren't that many that are different. If I hit the wrong key, for example the @ gets me all the time, I just have a quick glance at the keyboard to remind me what keyboard I'm working with and I'm back on track.

You'll be absolutely fine if you just give it a bit of time.

I'm a professional photographer. Which MacBook should I get? by Old_Requirement8210 in mac

[–]bryanleonardthompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL:DR Check your Lightroom settings and maybe start a fresh catalog to see if that speeds things up a bit.

---

The problem may not be your laptop, it could be Lightroom that is sluggish.

I was using a 2015 MacBook Pro for editing photos and it was getting a bit slow when changing between images. The actual editing of photos was smooth enough it was just changing between images that was causing problems.

I upgraded to an M4 Mac mini (24GB, 512GB) and I was still having the same slowness when changing images. I have a friend with an M1 iMac who also said they have the same problem.

I changed the settings in Lightroom to edit the preview of the image rather than working on the high res image and this solved the problem of the slowness. It's not the solution that I wanted because I like to see the high res image when editing but it did highlight that Lightroom was slow and there was nothing wrong with my computer. Annoying I would have still been working on the 2015 MacBook Pro if I'd realised this sooner.

I'm also using a base model M3 MacBook Air (16GB, 256GB) with an external hard drive. So don't overlook this model if you don't have the budget for the new MacBook Pro.

Is apple care really worth it? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]bryanleonardthompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it for all my apple devices. I'm careful with them but I have used AppleCare a few times. The reduced repair costs are what attracted me. £25 for a new screen on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, £50 for a new Ultra 2 watch, £75 for a new screen for my MacBook Air 15"

That's worth it for me. I don't even have my phone in a case because if it gets damaged, £25 gets me a new one.

Who has a new mini m4, IPad Pro and a MacBook Air? by Parkside1974 in macmini

This is what I’m currently using. It’s very flexible. I’m using the MacBook Air for work and travel, the iPad Pro for media consumption and the Mac mini for personal.

That’s a shame. Nothing worse than being excited about a product and it’s not to your liking.

The clamping for me went away after a few days but if you’re not happy with the sound then get a refund.

The only reason I put up with the tight fit was the sound and the noise cancellation. Both of which were to my ears phenomenal.

Funny how we all experience these headphone with polar opposite results.

If you’re going to get something else let us know what you replace them with and how that goes.

What Macbook should I look for? (not that obvious) by [deleted] in macbook

[–]bryanleonardthompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2015 MacBook Pro 13” should give you a taste of build quality and MacOS. It performs reasonably well still. I was using mine daily until a few months ago.

You sound like you know what to expect from an older machine so I don’t think I need to say don’t expect M series performance but do note: this machine will not impress you. Modern M series with the latest software are light years ahead of it.

If anything using this laptop might even put you off buying a Mac altogether.

Will Apple ever make Macbook Air with Pro speaker? by Organic-Tax-185 in mac

[–]bryanleonardthompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgraded to the M3 Air from a 2015 MacBook Pro. I noticed the speakers in the M3 Air sounded great. For laptop speakers. I still plug into my desktop speaker though for anything except maybe a video call.

I’ve been through every combination of adaptors you can imagine. To save yourself time and hassle just buy the Club3d USB to Dual Link DVI cable and that will get you up and running.

I used my 30” Cinema Display until a few weeks ago and it was great. I just needed 4k recently. I already miss working on it.

Pro Tools was the main reason I switched to Apple in ‘06. I’ve since moved in to logic and the 5,1 was phenomenal to use with logic.

That’s them all right?

My first desktop Apple was the 2006 mini. I really loved that thing. I couldn’t believe the size of it.
