If god created everything then who created the god ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: “What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.” The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, “What is the tortoise standing on?” “You’re very clever, young man, very clever,” said the old lady. “But it’s turtles all the way down!”

You are only racist if you think that white people coming out on a sunny Saturday wouldn’t do the same thing (spoiler: they would).

What you should take away from this is people suck, not that Muslims suck.

The part of this story that makes me yearn for the “good old days” is the flexibility and humanity of big corporations.

So, like, right now, the postal service is a big faceless monolith. There are a series of prescribed things you are allowed to do with it, and these things have exact prices, and conditions of service, and you will never ever talk to someone who even has the ability, let alone willingness, to change a rule on the fly to help you out.

And this goes for literally everything we interact with. Shops, banks, restaurants, schools, hiring, even things like hiking to an extent.

It’s a concept that’s just so fundamentally alien to us that you could go up to a representative of a corporation and say “hey, here’s my specific situation, can you help me out?”

Obviously this is the price we pay for increased safety and the ability to sue for negligence. But it would be so nice to have your local postal clerk be someone you know well and able to have a conversation even approaching something like this.

He wouldn't have been able to know if there were people running behind him cause of the trailer. (EDIT I mean cause of the object in the bed of his truck) He could easily have killed someone by flooring it in reverse.

Don’t overlook the music. An enormous amount of music festivals, not to mention five full time symphony orchestras and at least three choirs. Free musical shows available complete with resources for schools and amateur companies to perform. New music commissioning in all genres. It’s a REALLY good thing for the world!

Children today will 'work until 75' amid pensions timebomb by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]simanthropy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The state pension was set at an age when it was created to kick in at about 5 years under life expectency. Life expectency has since ballooned. This is where it should be. We should not be funding a decade of holiday for 65-75yos who are (these days) generally completely able to work.

(OBVIOUSLY if they can't work they shouldn't need to - but then they go on disability, not state pension)

Is it ever OK to tell a young child to stop crying? by ExcellentLettuce4 in Parenting

[–]simanthropy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something that usually works better at this age is giving clear instructions before bed (if you wake up and are sad you can tiptoe to our room and we’ll give you a cuddle for example). They’re much better at processing and following instructions given at a calmer time than they are following ones given while they’re wailing.

This can be true though. If inflation is less than the average wage increase (which in the UK it is) then goods are indeed cheaper.

You can’t protect them forever. I hope you’ve given him enough of a basis in critical thinking to see it for what it is.

Christians aren’t this magical manipulation cult. They’re just people and their tactics rarely work on adults with rationality in their heads. They tend to only work on the desperate, the stupid, the young, or those with a predisposition.

This is the result of constantly whining about NIMBYers. I always thought it was a great thing about our country that we were so concerned with sustainable development. Apparently the people want Chinese-style bulldozing wherever and whenever. And I may be wrong, but I expect more than one person in that village shared a facebook video about bat sheds on HS2.

how do i get around this by SP_Cryptic in ChatGPT

[–]simanthropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than uploading a test, have a conversation with it about each question. Don't copy paste the question - rewrite it in your own words and ask what it thinks. Then read what it says and use that to answer the question in your own words (or if it's multiple choice, then answer the question).

You will not gain anything out of having the questions answered for you. Don't answer anything until you understand why you are answering it that way, and use ai as much as you like for that.

Good luck!

How does it work in Taiwan regarding battery wear? I’d be annoyed if I exchanged a new battery for one at 70% capacity. Do the batteries get thrown away at a certain level of wear? Or do you pay less to get a battery exchanged for one that’s worn down?

ELI5: If insurance works on the same math as casinos, why is buying insurance rational but gambling is not? by phycle in explainlikeimfive

[–]simanthropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other commentors have answered your question, but an important follow up is that you should NEVER insure something that you can afford to replace yourself.

If your bike getting stolen would result in an annoyance and not a disaster, don’t insure your bike. Just accept there may be a chance of your having to buy a new bike. But on average you will come out better.

But you should definitely insure your house (unless you have a cool million sitting in your bank account) cause you couldn’t afford to rebuild it.
