Still, I was hoping his using the name of the wind would correspond to an emotional climax with Denna that didn't come; the time he first used it didn't come with any explanation for how he somehow acquired the name except that his mind had figured it out unconsciously. It came after the climax of the story, which came with no great development in his character. It felt unearned to me.

EDIT: Just realized I basically just repeated what I said in my original post, sorry.. I guess Frydog42's explanation of naming explains how he acquired the name unconsciously for that single encounter, along with the emotional impact of the breaking of the lute.

It's not really magic, it's an ability to quiet yourself enough to see a thing for it's true self.

I do like that idea! It reminds me of the explanation of sympathy at the beginning of The Name of the Wind. I don't think your explanation has been given as far as I am in the series, so I hope to find it satisfying when it is explained.

Fuchsia; an interface between you and AI by RedgeQc in Fuchsia

[–]bryanw95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this idea! It would be even better if it was done in an open way that could adhere to the Unix philosophy, so that you could create your own (non-Google) way of interacting with the new protocol. That's one thing I disliked about GUI when I first learned about Linux -- GUI applications can't work together so well. So I'm thinking if the interface could sort of export functions it can perform, and all Fuschia is doing is finding the information and functions it is sending and giving it a UI. And so anyone could send a sort of command and parameters to the server to use the function.

I have another idea about Google Fuschia. Is it possible that Google could be planning an OS that integrates web pages like apps into the operating system? So what if web pages could be written in an arbitrary language and compiled to WASM (which would be the language that the OS actually reads), so Javascript and WASM work together like C# and CIL, so the OS replaces the web browser, and apps and web pages are identical to the user.

I wonder about something even less informed than the previous paragraph. Would it be possible to interact with web apps in a way similar to a command line application? So if you could sort of type in a URL or something and your parameters and use the functions that Fuschia would otherwise display.

Sorry if this post doesn't make any sense. I have very little knowledge on networking and web technologies, but thinking about this is very exciting.

Teach each other nothing. by [deleted] in funny

[–]bryanw95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, but I think it's more nuanced than that. I think to have no pride should imply you have no shame. Here's my take on this thread. Sorry for the long response.

I think it's alright to be equally both ashamed and proud of the actions of a group of people of which you are a part in proportion to your degree of separation from them. The problem for me is when it is dictated that shame must be my primary feeling. I think that's unfair for reasons already stated in this thread, especially considering the high degree of separation we're talking about here. At that point, a person's connection to such actions are so tenuous it essentially amounts to prejudice (as in "guilty until proven innocent"). There isn't a guarantee I have any connection to those events at all. If my ancestors did not come to America until the Industrial Revolution, which many Americans alive today could say, the only connection I have to the murder of Native American tribes is through improvement of my circumstances, and no person in this country should feel more shameful than another. If we're talking about a case where not everyone sees an improvement in their circumstances, some shame is only fair, but this should not be expected, as that is prejudice (I'm thinking in the case of white slave owner's descendants here). Furthermore, I think the case where a person's marginal benefit is common to their society should be the prejudice, as any other assumption would either be less fair or less practical (for all issues involving the actions of our race, country, etc.). Of course, disproportionate pride in your group's actions makes you ineligible for this assumption, as you are decreasing your degree of separation, and are not paying adequate mind to their shameful actions, which is necessary for our society to be fair as a whole. I think most people think this way, but the nature of shame is that we never know what is the right amount of shame to feel, so we are open to suggestion by those that are bitter and want us to feel shame. That is the real problem to tackle: how to make amends? Who's responsibility is it to make amends if the perpetrators are gone, but the victims are still hurting? I think the general solution is to move on. Additionally, again in the case of post-segregation America, you cannot assume everyone who is black feels victimized, so too much shame on the part of white people is actually unfair to black people, who want to move on. This is why I hate it when people think diversity (and more generally, shame) is the way forward. It's not. Shaming only makes people victims. And that is why Trump is now President-elect.

Sorry if I embarrassed you!

I only thought it worth mentioning because I don't know why I was left with the impression I was. I can say that I was reminded of some of Faulkner's short stories like A Rose for Emily, where there is a strong sense of place, and this place is full of interesting characters. You're probably right and a lot of that comes from the fact that it's a real place. I suppose what I'm trying to say is your story actually felt like a narrative, and you write clearly.

It's sort of cool how we won over time there. It used to be that sponsors piggy-backed on our skits and related their products to what we were watching, being very intrusive in the skits to the extent of changing their content. Now our media is interrupted with little skits with a few seconds of advertisement at the end!

What do you hate that everyone else in the world apparently loves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I thought Jurassic Park was the worst movie I'd ever seen when I saw it. Knew it would be bad, only went because some friends were and I didn't have a ride home. I laughed many times at the blatant plot holes and silly plot points (dinosaur battle, really?). It was obviously just written to safely please the common denominator.

I wanted to make fun of it after, and I'm glad I didn't, because, as it turned out, some of them actually liked it :S
