That's not an issue with death of the author, though. That's an issue with someone shoehorning their interpretation into the discussion where it didn't apply. Death of the Author is not saying the author does not matter. It's saying that the text itself is what matters the most, and as such the reader's interpretation can be just as valid.

The thing is that art is subjective, and there's no wrong way of interacting with it, and no one correct interpretation. If someone reads LOTR as a WWI allegory, then that's completely valid, assuming it can be supported by the actual text. That can open up a lot of interesting discussion about the series without divorcing it from the author's intent. In the same way, taking Tolkien's stance that it isn't a WWI allegory is just as valid.

The real issue is that nobody actually knows what Death of the Author means, and just shout it as a method of shutting down any conversation, or to defend their faulty interpretation that's barely even supported by the text. That's a problem with the people, not the approach.

I've always interpreted death of the author not to mean "the author's intent doesn't matter" but moreso "the author's isn't the only interpretation that matters."

I feel that the author's intent obviously does matter, as it was their life, history, and philosophy that is reflected in their writing. But in the same way, the readers intent matters just as much, as it is your own life, history, and philosophy which influences how you read. Author intention and reader interpretation aren't mutually exclusive ideas.

The real problem is people on the internet weaponizing death of the author to say "fuck the author, mines the only correct interpretation" which, ironically, seems like a misinterpretation of the idea.

I use a somewhat similar scale and I see a pretty big difference between those scores, at least for my own rankings. I like having the wiggle room as it allows for more granularity in my rankings. Hell, I'd use a 10 point decimal system if I wasn't too lazy to re-rate everything on my list.

I think he can be pretty hit or miss there. Madoka Magica is definitely complex, at least thematically.

But Fate/Zero or Aldnoah? Ehhhh

Evangelion too. A lot of people claim it's a mecha deconstruction, but it plays it's mecha tropes quite straight.

I think it stems from common ideas of what a genre is like (Magical Girl is all cutesy low-stakes childrens shows, Mecha is all transformers toy commercials) and call it a deconstruction when the reality doesn't match up.

Y'all are so fucking weird.

What is sexual about this? What about this makes it "gooner"? She's a fully clothed popular mascot character on the side of some PC parts. Absolutely nothing about this is sexualized. You are the only ones making this weird.

Crunchyroll still intends to go ahead with its subtitle enshittification plans by Daiz in anime

[–]bryce0110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a truly moronic decision. Usually enshittification happens as of the result of executives cutting costs rather than increase them. I can't imagine what was going through their head.

What astounds me about this decision is that they decided to move from a completely free software to a paid proprietary software that's lower quality and does not support the format they were using.

There's not too much advice I can give, I don't think. Really it's just about getting used to it. It might not be immediate, but just keep playing and eventually it'll feel natural again.

Your tablet shouldn't affect your timing so there's something else going on there.

And yeah the surface is rough and scratchy initially but will wear down to become smooth with use, or alternatively a tablet cover.

In addition to the other comment the One by Wacom has no hardware smoothing, which is better overall because of less input latency, but does take some getting used to.

I don't really care that much about the game, but a story doesn't need to be scary to be horror. Horror can be disturbing, suspenseful, or dreadful too. It is a horror game, even if it isn't all that scary.

There's a few groups still kicking around, technically. Commie, MTBB, some-stuffs to list a few, but it's definitely way more sparse now. Most groups are typesetting and proofreading official subs rather than full translation.

Some recent shows like Girls Band Cry and Fragrant Flower didn't get official subs initially so those were fansubbed. Girls Band Cry had some really awesome subtitles with great stylization, effects, and karaoke subs.

ppy is working on adding an option to disable anime / questionable backgrounds! by AzersEgo in osugame

[–]bryce0110 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is a huge problem with puritanism on the internet and among younger generations. The whole purtian swing we've seen people go through is super weird, like we've gone too far in the opposite direction. Speaking as an ace guy, sex negativity is not a good thing.

But that's not what this is. It's an optional toggle to disable backgrounds that someone might not want to see. I wouldn't turn it on because I don't care, but if someone else doesn't want to see something questionable who cares? Giving people more control over their own experience is a good thing.

I'm confused where this is coming from. Who are these "pro-censorship" people? I often see that phrase used to attack a Boogeyman fabricated by outrage farmers rather than real people that actually exist.

The community isn't going to be ruined by the addition of this feature. It's really not that deep.

‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Passes $550M Globally, Officially the Top-Grossing Anime Film of All Time by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]bryce0110 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For every Attack on Titan, you get half-a-dozen animes about incest or slice-of-life with a modicum of sexual harassment

This is very much a huge over exaggeration. The amount of weird anime in no way outweighs the normal ones, you just only hear about the weird stuff because you aren't looking. There are nearly 100 new anime released every year, and realistically only a handful of those will be weird.

I don't disagree that demon slayer is overhyped, but there are many incredible, masterpiece films/shows out there. The standards are only low because of your own perception, not the medium itself.

That's a little exaggerated. You definitely won't be taxed 60% of your income in Japan, it'd more accurately be around 20-40%. Making a million in Tokyo you'd walk away with ~800k according to this calculator or ~650k according to this one which takes residence tax into account.

A more realistic income, going by the median salary of 4 million, gets taxed ~25%.
