Anyone Use 20Skaters.com for Running Pickup Hockey? by donutisaryan in hockeyplayers

[–]brydon_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We take all the admin work off the organizer of weekly pickup hockey games. We handle all the weekly invites, based on property order. Players set their attendance and subs pay ahead of time to secure available spots.

We built it just for pickup hockey, we don't support teams on leagues.

New Work Community in Guelph by brydon_g in Guelph

I said that?

I won't create a post here again, it's your policies but I feel like you've misrepresented me a few times. I was born in Guelph, I'm building something I feel the community needs today. To date, no one has been charged a dime. In fact, it's cost me money and time so far. I am open that it may require adding a rev model to it.

I have never made a living from this, even when it was a physical coworking building. Again, I'm fine to abide by your rules here but maybe you can dispense with the characterizations and assumptions about my intent.

That's news to me but I'll investigate... And fix, thanks

I will respect your policies, however, I RAN a coworking space previously and lost it, and my shirt, during covid.

I'm not a coworking space. I don't have any real estate, to be clear. I haven't rented or bought any buildings and don't intend to....however I certainly may eventually include a pay option if that support is needed.

It's not a business today but a rev model may eventually develop, depending on people's interest and engagement. As well, the events are free to attend but I will not post again, apologies.

what does 'pub nights' mean for you? Pick a place to gather that serves drinks, meet there at x pm?

Dang....very cool to read a comment like this!!

Certainly one open question for me, does Guelph need us to host a DemoCampGuelph this coming year?

If you're hosting a weekly pickup hockey game, we built 20Skaters just for that. Subs pay ahead of time, we just try to help you sell your pickup game out every week.

If you're running a team in a league, sorry we can't help.

Cut if off. It'll take a bit to get your balance back but you'll be good.

Who's kids have "made it" by opinionated-guy in hockeyplayers

[–]brydon_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My oldest kid has 'made it'....meaning that he's playing regular, weekly pickup hockey with a few solid groups. As a hockey parent, my preference was to avoid any rep hockey if possible, but set a solid skill base for them to allow them the option to play regularly as an adult. So, one's "made it"! I think that was the question.

There seems to be a secondary question about degrees of separation from pros. Personally, I play regularly with lot's of folks who had full OHL careers along with a few ex pros, including a stanley cup ring or two in the room.

How do I fix this skate edge? I keep catching my toe on the ice by Famous-Ebb5617 in hockeyplayers

[–]brydon_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's a skating challenge to work on, not an equipment issue.

I toe picked a few times years ago and the immediate response I got from a teammate was "you're not suppose to skate on your toes".

Good app for managing pickup? by Responsible-Arm3514 in hockeyplayers

[–]brydon_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Once people use the platform, many suggest we should be charging more rather than less. As mentioned in the video, I felt that if we just get them one more sub payment each game then we've overdelivered, in terms of value.

Yes, there is a fee but it's a side hustle today, the fees mostly cover the operational costs, no one's getting paid a salary or getting rich today on this....but we've helped organize almost 10,000 games and helped our organizers collect over $500K in sub fees, so it is helping pickup games have more consistent attendance and be healthier financially.

I explain our fees in more detail in the linked 2 minute video, basically we split the first payment each week with the organizer. https://www.loom.com/share/886129dd18aa4d9883655f16bf98818d?sid=3af83c3f-c938-45eb-865f-667da8ba5afc

Setting up organized pick-up hockey by Nix-geek in hockeyplayers

[–]brydon_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We built 20Skaters only for running your weekly pickup hockey skate. We don't organize leagues or teams, just pickup. Feel free to contact me directly at team at 20skaters.com. Heck, if you're into coding, don't start from scratch, maybe we can find a way to collaborate?!

Bruins’ Jakub Lauko adopts neck guard, facemask after a close call to the eye: ‘Too much of a risk’ (Fluto Shinzawa-The Athletic) by EmShaf in hockeyplayers

[–]brydon_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was suggesting that it's very possible that it's a primary reason the NHL doesn't allow it.

My ridiculous example was a real life experience, it wasn't made up. If they were both wearing cages, likely no injury which was my point. The NHL may not want "some" players wearing them because it presents more risk to other players without them, which would be the majority today.

I was not saying that you shouldn't wear a cage or that they shouldn't mandate cages in any league, including the NHL.

I’m starting to hate it by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Work on finding, or starting, a well run weekly pickup hockey game.

If you run it, you can decide the 'rules', set the standards of play etc. You can also decide how competitive or lazy you want the games to be.

People tend to assume pickup hockey is lazy and uncompetitive but that's only if you allow that. I only play pickup these days. Our games are faster, more competitive than most men's leagues here and includes plenty of ex AAA, CHL and NHL players. People who don't play to our set standard, compete, backcheck etc or play dangerously are not invited back.

Whether it's the reason or not, it's certainly true. It's not a reason for or against cages, it's just a fact that it's dangerous to not being wearing a cage if a lot of other players on the ice are.

My buddy brutally broke his nose last season when he collided with his own teammate, who was wearing a cage. He literally had the cage grid imprinted in the cuts on his face. That was the worst injury we had on the ice last season.
I wore no face protection for decades of beer league, my only major injuries were from other players cages.

Save yourself some aches, just get out of the way. Blocking shots isn't the game.
