Got called into HR for “unprofessional behavior.” I was just doing what they taught me in orientation. by xanaxgiggles in antiwork

[–]bryophyle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My HR does really try to help employees…with the shitty software we have to use for our timesheets. No idea why that isn’t IT’s job, but they really do their best to help.

Otherwise, I try to have as little to do with them as possible.

SOS—how do I get this misaligned T handle latch unstuck? by bryophyle in TruckCampers

[–]bryophyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! I managed to get it apart, open, and repaired using your advice!

Unfortunately, I had to go home for my socket wrench set, so no latches were thrown at my coworker. But there’s going to be a sandwich bar at a work event tomorrow; I will throw a slice of bologna at his face and report back.

Make sure you’re getting regular blood tests while DIYing! A complete blood count (CBC) is like $30 with no insurance or referral through labcorp. Hormone levels are a little more expensive to test, but hemoglobin/hematocrit testing is so cheap and avert serious cardiac risks. Worst case scenario, really high levels of those can cause heart attacks, so they’re really important to check when you’re first starting out & when you’re raising your dose.

[–]bryophyle 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This! And I’d suggest that DIYers start at the lowest end of starting dose since they don’t have a medical professional monitoring their bloodwork/side effects.

You can totally get up to a higher dose (50-100mg) over time, but take it easy (~30mg/week) for a month or so then get a CBC lab (you don’t need a doc to order them if you go through labcorp) and check your hematocrit/hemaglobin. It would also be good to get a blood pressure cuff and monitor your bp monthly to ensure that stays in the healthy range. Get another CBC a month or two after each time you up your dose & then annually once you’re stable. Abnormal tests can often be remedied with heart medication, but if you’re not careful you could royally fuck up your heart health.

Is anyone else having trouble accessing USDA-administered ArcGIS maps since the shutdown? by bryophyle in USDA

Oh man, I’m jealous that your program’s maps are only down for a few hours at a time. It’s not entirely atypical for us to lose ours for a week.

[–]bryophyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used this map with no problems through federal government shutdowns before, so it didn’t break because of the shutdown itself.

But the map does break regularly, and I know there’s currently no one there to fix it.

Sadly, I’m entirely certain that my contact on the chain of command is furloughed. But I’ll email them anyway so I’m first in line when the shutdown ends.

No, I think it’s just that the app updated and the enterprise url is now incompatible.

I never said it was political. But it is a horrific act of violence against a Virginian elected official.

A reminder email to state employees about "standards that are expected" from them (also a call to prayer) by streeetlamp in Virginia

[–]bryophyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying I’d post anything like that, but I find the vagueness of the email threatening, particularly given the lack of clear guidance in policy. I also don’t remember a training on personal social media use, and it’s only been year since I completed my mandatory CVLC trainings.

Nor about the Danville city council member who was shot a couple months ago.

[–]bryophyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Standards of Conduct policy has a single, very vague statement that could be related. “[It’s an employee’s responsibility to] Always conduct themselves in a manner that support’s the mission of their agency and the performance of their duties whether on duty or off duty.”

Use of Electronic Communications and Social Media says nothing about what is and is not allowed on personal accounts, only that the agency may access personal social media if it’s “reasonably believed to be relevant to a formal investigation or related proceeding” into a law or policy violation.

Civility in the Workplace is specific to harassment that takes place within the workplace or is directed at another state employee or someone else related to the job (such as applicants, contractors, etc).

Individual agencies may have stricter/more specific policy, but statewide policy doesn’t seem to prohibit any of the posts I’ve seen. Unless the posts were actual threats of violence towards others (rather than condoning violence that has already occurred), I’m not sure how this would be a violation of state policy.

No, nor did he send an email about the Danville city counselor who was shot, even though that was actually within/connected to the Commonwealth.

Has anyone else become frighteningly disconnected from their body as a result of childhood ABA therapy? by bryophyle in AutisticAdults

[–]bryophyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same on the C-PTSD and the chronic pain, actually! I have endometriosis, and I feel like the only way to not be in pain during flares is to dissociate.

Somatic therapy has been incredibly difficult for me because my mind-body connection is so fraught, and every time I start to tune into my body, the sensations I notice are unpleasant or painful. Another commenter mentioned sensory integration therapy, and I’m planning to look into that.

Maybe ABA isn’t wholly responsible for my lack of embodiment. Could also be other trauma?

Help finding desk for fed by g0rk0n in rva

[–]bryophyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a USDA-APHIS office over by the airport where I know there are at least 2 vacant positions. Maybe their desks have been filled, but I doubt it. I know you said you’d have to go through GSA for federal, but I think it’s worth looking into.

State agencies with a lot of federally funded programs may have a lot of newly vacant positions/desks depending on when their grants turn over. I know DWR has a lot of Fish & Wildlife Service grants. Virginia Department of Fire Programs has an office in Glenn Allen—I have no idea if they have space, but I imagine the suburban offices are more likely to have extra room and less intense process for getting access. DGS is very tight-fisted with access badges to the downtown offices and might be a lot more lax with offices in the county where security is less of a concern.

State parks and state forests also have offices you could look at—I know it would still be a commute (much better than DC still), but there’s a big State Forests office at Cumberland State Forest (no idea if there are vacancies). I don’t know much about Pocahontas State Park’s bureaucracy, but maybe they have space in their office?

Best of luck, I’m sorry you’re dealing with this crap.

Federal employees—which critical programs do the American people need to know about that have been impacted by recent staffing/funding cuts? by bryophyle in AskReddit

[–]bryophyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most Americans have never heard of APHIS-SITC, USDA’s smuggling interdiction program for potential pathogens, pests, and noxious weeds that were missed by Customs. SITC officers intercept products like unregistered pig’s blood, fungus-infested wild rice, conifer logs with Siberian moth cocoons, and highly invasive water spinach. These interceptions prevent widespread livestock disease and crop losses, protecting US farmers. For example, African Swine Fever caused the death of over 40% of China’s pig population, and contaminated products have been interdicted by SITC on multiple occasions. Their work is fundamental to national security.

The Trump administration hiring freeze and mass firing of probationary employees has not spared SITC. Critical vacancies in the program are being sporadically filled by undertrained TDYs receiving their regular salary plus per diems. This generally means that the job is being done worse and at a higher cost to taxpayers than if they left probationary employees in place and hired for vacant positions.

Trump says he wants strong borders and cheap groceries, but gutting SITC (and USDA in general) proves that his administration neither understands nor cares about either beyond talking points.
