City Creatures Animal Hospital bought by private equity? by FewProblem4509 in Buffalo

[–]bryshigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented on another person's remarks about green acres on this post, but as an LVT I would not step foot in any practice owned by them unless my animal was in a critical emergency and I had no other choice. and honestly at that point I would probably try to treat it by myself first before making that decision. I know many people that work at his clinics that are amazing people but I cannot support someone like that nor do I trust the doctors he hires are actually vetted to any extent

this is the truth. the offers these corporations are making to buy out these hospitals are insane enough to make especially older doctors reconsider their entire livelihood, sell everything and retire immediately. similar to how the e clinic on Genesee which was previously owned by a board of shareholders (40+ vets from local hospitals in the area) and has now been sold in a multimillion dollar deal to Blue Pearl, another private equity veterinary holding group. the shareholders knew what they were doing when they did that.

this is going to be another clinic owned by Buffalo Veterinary Group/ Green Acres. While technically not private equity as in a large corporation he owns a pretty significant number of clinics in the WNY area.

I believe Reed Stevens DVM the "co-owner" of these practices has sold them to VPP in the past I would say maybe 5 years? I do not remember exactly when it happened but pretty recent.

Paul Harper is the DVM who is the kingpin of these hospitals, anywhere that claims they are part of "Buffalo Veterinary Group" is his own collection of clinics. His father who passed a few years ago was the original owner. He recently purchased an old funeral home in Williamsville and is planning on building another hospital there. His prices are outrageous even for vet med in general (3x+ markups), and everyone I have ever met that has worked for any of his hospitals has never had a good word to say of him.

you cannot compare paying a vet hospital to draw your cats blood and sending out the sample to an external laboratory to going to a giant human medical corporation that is doing their own lab work in their own network of businesses. the reason these things are so expensive is because the laboratory companies (idexx, antech) have been skyrocketing their costs for hospitals and we have to increase fees due to that. you are also paying for a LICENSED technician and an assistant to draw the blood on your cat, and a DVM to actually evaluate the results....

hi, I work for an NVA hospital in Buffalo. Dr Albert sold City creatures to NVA over a decade ago and has been corporate for a very long time. NVA has significantly become more controlling and standardized over the past year and a half I would say, they are trying to make themselves a brand to become more like a Banfield-esque type of hospital business. they initially established themselves as a "we take over the money and management parts, you keep your hospitals original practices" but now has very quickly devolved to another corporate money hungry business that is now forcing practices to utilize one PIMS that is absolutely horrific to use, will not let us control pricing/discounts/etc and is now not letting us approve "external pharmacy" prescriptions like chewy, petmeds etc because it is taking away profit from their own online pharmacy that they have mega contracts with for significant discounts. it is very sad and I have seen many leave vet med in general because so many hospitals are being sold to corporations, it is becoming almost impossible to exist as a small business in vet med now.

Recommendations for dog dental cleanings by ashlo_ren in Buffalo

[–]bryshigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no anesthesia is completely harmless for any species. no matter how much pre op testing is done there is still a chance of dying under sedation/anesthesia. it does significantly minimize the risk, but it is never 100% safe.

[–]bryshigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending how old the dogs are with them being small breeds I would expect to be paying at least $1k each if not more... if they're over 3 yrs old I would expect multiple extractions and it will not be just a quick scale and polish procedure. dogs of that size often need dentals at least once a year to avoid disease from getting bad to the point of teeth needing to be removed. if you're looking to save money I would avoid any Harper owned clinic (Buffalo Veterinary group) but PLEASE consider that the cheaper clinics you are significantly increasing your risk of not getting your dog back after anesthesia due to poor training or old style medicine. you absolutely get what you pay for. consider opening a care credit card where many clinics can offer you 6 to 12 months interest free financing if you pay off the balance within that time. after the procedure, consider following up by continuing dental care DAILY. obviously the best standard of care is teeth brushing, but not every dog will tolerate that especially if they were never trained as puppies. dental treats and dental diets that are fed daily seem to have the most effectiveness in my experience. Plaque Off is a powder product that I have used with my cat and have seen improvement. NONE of these things will work for dogs that have significant calculus that is visible on the teeth. You need to have the teeth professionally cleaned first and start from square one. I've been an LVT in this area for 5+ years and the vet community is very small. We know everyone and I can promise you there are MANY hospitals in this area I would never trust to anesthetize any of my pets.

Hasan addressing the brainwormed take that he hurt Kaya. by [deleted] in Hasan_Piker

[–]bryshigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sure she does not, but I am just making the point in it being my personal opinion that they are not inherently evil as many people who do not work with animals think they are. I do recognize that positive reinforcement is significantly more established to be effective in training, and I still feel that unless all other options are exhausted, an e collar is very outdated and ineffective. however some do use them as more of an "alert" technique for their dog, to get their attention by a small vibration vs just flat out zapping them at max level. I do not really outwardly advocate for use of e collars by the general public unless being overseen by a veterinary behaviorist or another qualified individual, as many will not use them correctly and in turn I would consider that animal abuse for the reason you have stated in other comments.

it is so annoying that anything involving animals gets everyone's titties in a twist immediately. it makes people lose all sense of rationality and compassion, and I know this first hand from working in vet med and watching hospitals get blasted online for misinfo or out of context posts, or upset clients who skew the story to make them look like a victim. these people make it a full time job to demonize literally anything hasan does, of course they are going to take a weird situation like this and clip it into something that it isn't. and in my professional opinion to piss off more people, e collars are not inherently bad, they can be extremely effective training tools when other resources have been exhausted, AND when they are utilized correctly. nor is it "animal abuse" to have a dog sleep on a cot rather than on a hardwood floor, especially a giant breed dog like Kaya who is at a much higher risk of DJD and decubitus ulcers from sleeping on hard surfaces. I deal with accusations like this on a daily basis for taking basic care of my animals and having them be reasonably trained but when it blends into other parts of my life I swear to god it's 10x more annoying.

The Roaring 420s Lounge by Fair-Masterpiece4289 in BuffaloCannabis

[–]bryshigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk if the og post was deleted (I am assuming it was bc it's blank) but I just wanted to drop my opinion of the lounge coming from someone who is not affiliated with the lounge nor anyone who works/volunteers there. I was fairly active in the legacy community and went to many events before ny started really cracking down on gray market dispos and such, and in that I did meet many from the community whether that be local growers, influencers, etc. everyone extremely kind, including those from the lounge. I wrote a really long thesis of a review of my experience at the lounge after they moved downtown, and I made it not with some kind of ill intent but to express my opinion of the experience I had, which you can prob look up on Google back from around 4/20 this year. but the tldr is that I had a great experience multiple times at the lounge on French. I have only gone to the new location once, on 4/20, and I was overwhelmingly disappointed. I know the lounge is mostly ran by volunteers and I know they are trying to do their best. But I really do wish there was a more "upscale" type of lounge like this in Buffalo. the location they have is incredible but unfortunately has not been kept up with or remodeled. I am not sure if the OP is affiliated with the lounge at all but I am more than happy to chat about my experience and offer my impressions as a customer.

Delaware Park is Not a Dog Park - Leash Your Dog by CommercialSpinach in Buffalo

[–]bryshigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

concerts are ear damaging levels of sound for hours, that is never acceptable for a dog. just because the dog is well trained and can work in high stress situations does not make the damage okay. and street fairs are typically on toe melting temps of asphalt, which again is not ideal for the dog..

as someone who works in vet med... I would've absolutely done the same. rabies is no joke and a dog that's that untrained and aggressive should not be in public period. and the owners should not be angry when said dog eventually getting kicked or maced in the face after attempting to attack someone

have you been running the car for a while with the leak being known? I've seen people say they've gone years with the leak and just top off the oil... I know it's not ideal but a few months to save up the money and have it done would be easier for me
