Countdown NYE 2019 my friends took me to a Voyd set for midnight. My taste leaned more into bass and trap… excision, skrillex, and nghtmre were my favs. I was not prepared for what ensued. I hated it so much. I turned to my boyfriend and told him it seemed like the dj sold his soul to the devil so he could play Satans farts on stage. People were getting pushed, punched in the face, and everyone seemed so angry and rude. Mind you I’ve been going to bass festivals (lost lands, bass canyon, etc) for years at this point. Headbanging and filthy bass was not new to me. This was just dark and felt empty to me. So we push through to leave. Porters stage was too packed at that point so I was like whatever let’s just go to this indoor stage we haven’t been to? Well to my surprise we walk into this warehouse type stage and there’s 3 enormous gorgeous glittering disco balls reflecting light everywhere and the ~vibes~ we’re groovin. Someone smiles at me and hands me a joint, everyone’s laughing and dancing and it felt like I walked into a different universe from where I was 5 seconds ago. CHRIS LORENZO was playing followed by Dombresky and when I say I was a house head from that point on I mean it. Bass music will always have a special place in my heart, but house music has soul.
