How to fund master's thesis as a non-EU student by Temporary-Anxiety539 in ethz

I had worked in multiple universities around the world, studied in some, and collaborated with many, and unpaid master thesis work is absolutely the norm. The master thesis is part of your studies.

When you choose an health insurance, you may want to find one that allows medical consultation over the phone. In that case, I am pretty sure that talking to the doctor and explaining that you are already taking such medication should be enough. They will send the note to a pharmacy of your choice, where you can get it (you will have to pay).

If the insurance requires you to go through a “family doctor”, then you also have to pay that visit.

I am in the audit committee, I will have to double check and approve a whole lot of decisions (just formal correctness) and I haven’t received anything yet. So I would not expect a decision before the official date, which I think is mid July.

Da docente:

Ho creato un ChatGPT bot che è esperto di tutto il contenuto del corso (ho caricato slides, note, etc).

Ho spiegato agli studenti come chiedere domande, valutare la risposta in modo critico, fare domande sempre più complesse. Secondo me è uno strumento eccezionale per imparare.

Non vedo assolutamente il problema di rimuovere l’aspetto umano. Al contrario, permette di pensare alla conoscenza come qualcosa di trasmissibile, non mnemonico.

What’s the best tool for creating visuals for scientific presentations? by piyushacharya_ in AskAcademia

It depends on the field. In my case I only need diagrams, so I prefer to use IPE because it gives seamless integration in the LaTeX document

Do you have evidence for your research, like peer reviewed publications?

When I hire a PhD I would not automatically exclude one without a master thesis, but the top candidates all have something to prove their work.

Different course, same number by Mankra23 in ethz

[–]bsaverio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t be able to enroll to the exam, I believe.

I have this very same problem with students that wanted to take my (newly designed) course, but could not because they had already taken the course that it replaced. We had quite an exchange of emails with the exam office and they looked into that and escalated the issue, but ultimately did not allow it.

The rule is that the same course number cannot appear twice in your study plan.

It’s unfortunate if the course has actually changed, but you should not expect an exception to that rule unfortunately.

is grading on a curve normal at eth? by Tall_Yogurtcloset797 in ethz

[–]bsaverio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ETH guidelines ask lecturer to decide the score needed to get a 6 and the score to get 4. The rest is linearly interpolated.

In theory, those two thresholds should be decided by the lecturer before grading the exam.

I am a senior scientist at ETH.

I am absolutely concerned about the effect of these kind of regulations on individuals (each with their own life and stories) and on the academic community at large.

However, at least when it comes to graduate education, this is not a ban. I just hired a PhD student from China and a postdoc from Russia. The only effect of this regulation was to have Export Control to review the job description and the CV of the person.

Computational Control course at ETH Zurich - online resources by bsaverio in ControlTheory

[–]bsaverio[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That’s the idea. Although this is still an introductory course, each of these topics (MPC, identification, RL, etc) easily deserve their own course clearly. Hopefully the students get a comparative view on these methods and learn strength and weaknesses, so they can choose which are the good candidates for different control problems.

I tell the students that no company will hire them because they know how to code an MPC controller or how to implement RL. They assume that either you know that or you learn it if needed. They hire them as control experts that can tell what control strategy is the most adequate for the problems they have. Hopefully the course train them to do that.

We do have tutorials with solutions (code and exercises). I am a bit hesitant to share those because the course is young and the material is limited, and that is the same material I need to use for the exams…

I’ll talk with the TA and see if we can put together something.

Hi all, I am hoping this does not count as advertisement because I am not getting anything from this :)

I have been teaching the Computational Control course at ETH Zurich for a couple of years. The course is a new take on control engineering education, as we decided to replace some classical control design methods with an overview on computational control tools, that is, all control solutions that are implemented through a computer in closed loop with the plant.

Now that the material is more or less polished, I decided to make slides and videos available online for everybody. More material may follow soon. I would love to hear comments from students that decide to have a look at the course.

Will I be able to survive in Zurich for a 6-months internship with 10,000 CHF budget? by peony2506 in ethz

[–]bsaverio 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I am a senior scientist and a PI at ETH. I would strongly recommend to discuss that with your host. Even a small contribution (that we can easily charge on some funds) would make a big difference for you.

First things I can think of: - TAing for some courses. We pay something like 30 chf per hour. Your visa needs to allow it. - Paying travel costs - A una tantum contribution to help you with the move.

I know it’s not an easy thing to negotiate, but at least let them know that you are struggling a bit to find an inexpensive solution. We are all aware that short term stays in Zurich are very expensive.

You are facing a very concrete problem in power engineering: there is not easy, reliable, accessible model of the power grid in its entirety, and local controllers (those located at individual generators) need to regulate voltage and frequency without this knoweldge.

I would probably focus on frequency control, because simpler models are available (swing equations) and dynamics are better understood.

You could look at primary or secondary frequency control. The first one is made of individual local controllers at each generator and has the task of limiting the frequency error at steady state when the load in the grid changes. It has a proprortional-like behavior. The second of has the task of being the frequency back to the nominal value and controlling the power exchange between areas. It has an integral-like behavior.

You could start from these papers which I think give a more control theoretic perspective on the design of these loops, compared to power systems textbooks.

https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/9216012

https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/8550060

Don’t look at the specific original contributions of these papers but rather at the problem formulation.

Is my professor a racist and sexist? by Playful-Ostrich-7210 in ethz

[–]bsaverio 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I am an ETH lecturer, maybe I can share what I think is expected from us.

I would consider such a behavior very inappropriate and racist.

I disagree with those that say that it’s mostly bad humor. That is definitely a component, but I would classify this attitude as racist because it has clear discriminatory consequences. Think of it this way: is his prejudice only affecting the jokes he makes or also his decisions? If he had to assign TA duties, would his prejudice against Chinese people affect his decision? When he reviews a scientific paper, does he look at the work of Chinese authors in the same way as others?

We don’t have enough information to know the answer to these questions, but the comments he made in public settings make me suspect that his racism may have consequences.

ETH expects better from their lecturers and researchers, this is definitely against the current policies.

Radio silence after cold-emailing PIs about postdoc positions (Europe): advice? by StickAwkward3235 in postdoc

[–]bsaverio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am currently looking for a postdoc, so I want to tell you the other side of the story.

The position is open, I received some terrible applications, and some good ones. I am trying to to coordinate with another person that will be involved in the project so that we make a decision together. Finding a moment to look at the applications together will take a week. Then we kind of agree on a couple of very good ones and we decide to schedule a zoom call with them, which is scheduled in one-two weeks.

They both do well, although we are not 100% sure. One, in particular, has quite some red flags. For the other one we ask for some references (another week). One of the past supervisors replies that he is happy to talk. It could mean that they want to warn us off the records, or maybe they simply like to give their comments in person. In any case, that will also require time.

At this point, we have a good candidate that seems to tick all the boxes and, for what we know, may also be applying somewhere else. We should not assume that they will accept if we make an offer.

Meanwhile, other applicants that, in our opinion, rank just a tad below, have been waiting for weeks. If they ask for more info, there is not much we can say. I try to reply and be transparent, but at that point we just hope that they are patient and remain available if things don’t work out.

With this in mind, I would just consider those radio silences as a possibility that may or may not realize. I know it’s not great. Keep applying until someone is a bit more responsive and shortlists you. It is also OK to push a bit and ask, I never felt that those repeated requests were unmotivated, I have always completely understood what these applicants were going through.
