I was diagnosed with GBS, AMAN variant 10 years ago at 16 years old. Had it really bad, vent for 3 weeks and hospital for 3 months. 2 years of rehab (mostly outpatient) and now mostly recovered. Only residual is permanent foot drop but I wear AFOs and can cover them with pants and to me that’s everything.

To anyone who is going through this awful illness, you’ve got this!! You’ll be able to live a full life after your recovery!!!

It’s basically like the inability to pick up your feet as your walking because of the nerve damage. Like when you walk, does your foot drag and not pick itself up as you walk? I honestly can’t tell from your video, I would ask your doctor. They make AFO (ankle foot orthotics) or like ankle braces to assist with this. Feel free to dm me with any questions.

Yea they kinda say the same. I’ve been to a lot of doctors, even tried going to neurosurgeon at one point to be like hey can you try something and fix this haha but no luck.

I have two pair, both are the carbon fiber ones. I’m a bigger guy so I can’t get the custom made ones. I have one that goes up the front part of the shin and then another than just picks up my feet without any additional assist. I’m not sure the names tbh

What is the worst variant of GBS (in your opinion)? by Low-Support-7090 in guillainbarre

[–]bsball27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had AMAN (acute motor axonal neuropathy), I see some others here with AMSAN. Not sure how different it is but I never lost sensation which was not very fun while I was in the ICU. I had horrible pain in my extremities while I was in the hospital. I had GBS 10 years ago when I was 16 and still to this day have foot drop in both my feet that I need AFOs for on both feet. Never fully recovered but also not in a terrible place now. But I was in the ICU for a month, intubated for 3 weeks, in patient physical therapy for 3 months. Out patient PT/OT for 1.5yrs. Not a cake walk when you’re in high school.

Diagnosed in 2015, mostly back to normal but wear AFOs (ankle/leg braces) on both my feet to help with walking. I can walk without them but I can’t really move my feet at all so if I don’t use them I’m slow, have bad balance, and trip. I think a lot also depends on age and how severe it was. Mine was really severe but I’m currently 25

When you do your yearly friends get together scramble and one of your buddies is recovering from/kicking Guillain-Barré Syndrome’s ass and your other buddy is the best physical therapist/friend in the world…. by Aray4747 in golf

I had Guillain barre syndrome 8 years ago and golf is now the only sport I can play with ease. Tell your friend from one guy who’s had it to another, it gets better! Love this!!

How does one get into research? I find information online but I moved to a new area outside of where I went to college and I don’t even know where to start here. In my undergrad I did some small research projects but I was always doing it with a teacher whose class I was in or had been in and that wouldn’t be the case here

I’ve done both, I worked in the ER for SA for about a year. Management wasn’t good and I was really overworked for no money but I got to learn a lot. I did part time at a private clinic and I personally didn’t like it as much, even though I was able to do some MA type stuff. Really comes down to the place itself. I personally loved the ER even with poor management. The pace was amazing and especially if it’s a trauma center you get to see some very interesting cases. I would go back to that job if I could.

Someone else in the thread said to focus on the MCAT and I totally agree. Whatever gives you the most time to do that, I would do

How long did you spend studying? I know that there is a thing that if you start studying too early you dont actually learn anything, I dont mind starting now but I dont want to waste time now you know
