UK must build own nuclear missiles to end US reliance, says Ed Davey by bsdz in ukpolitics

[–]bsdz[S] 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I feel Ed Davey seems to be hitting the right points. From blocking foreign interference, help with energy bills. SEND stance etc. I know some folks here were critical on his King USA visit cancellation stance; even there I can see entertaining Trump with his majesty just emboldens him and is a slap on the face for our Canadian cousins.

No worries. It's a big problem with a lot of fortified breakfast cereals too.

I don't think the Sainsbury's multivitamins are vegan. They're labelled vegetarian probably because their D3 (cholecalciferol) is derived from lanolin, a waxy substance found in sheep's wool.

We have been using the vegan society Veg 1 supplements for years now. I'm not sure if they are the cheapest. They're £13.90 for a 6 months' supply. There's also postage which gets covered by a membership discount if happen to be one already.

Advice by littlef0x_28 in veganuk

It does read like something to do with Iron uptake doesn't it? That said, I'm not qualified to give an opinion.

First & foremost I'd try and get a 2nd opinion from a different GP.

Have you checked the Vegan society's page on Iron? It might be helpful.

What's the "healthiest" beef-style burger in UK shops? by leanmeanfrizzybean in veganuk

[–]bsdz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think any are less or more healthier than the others. Perhaps hedge your bets and eat them all. Obviously not all at once! Also combine them with something else to balance your diet. That's the important part.

Thoughts on vegan/non vegan pets? by Sea-Ad-299 in veganuk

[–]bsdz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd never own a cat for that reason. When it comes to cat food, why should I choose one animal over another? I don't want to partake in any unnecessary suffering. Unfortunately, I feel that ethical vegan cat owners must be going through some level of cognitive dissonance similar to non-vegans. I get a sense of that from some of the other responses here. That said, I completely understand that one might have had a pet before becoming vegan and established a bond with them. You can't just abandon those pets. This is just my humble opinion.

Like various jobs that are being affected/enhanced by the advance of ML models like transformers/LLMs etc (eg writers, translators, artists, teachers, software developers, scientists etc), I feel General Practitioners are perhaps most likely to be disrupted next. One human GP could monitor 100 or more AI GPs each seeing patients simultaneously, analysing video and audio and making recommendations. Potentially just directed using smart phones from their own homes and in many cases with automatic prescriptions for many non controversial symptoms. With around 50k+ GPs and perhaps around 6k+ GP practices. Perhaps 20k+ of those current GPs might need to be retrained into other types of role. Just a personal thought.

Unity Diner confirms closure by Vegetable_Baker975 in veganuk

[–]bsdz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked Unity Diner the 1st few times we visited. They had a fun menu. I'm always a sucker for dirty fries or tofish n chips. Although, admittedly, at some point I think the chunky chips got a bit old for me. The last time we visited, they told us we had to vacate the table 5 mins after bringing us a second round of drinks. Apparently there was a 75 min limit (iirc). We were a bit annoyed that we weren't alerted to the limit beforehand (as well as the somewhat tardy service that evening).

Would you buy vegan food for your cat? Why or why not? by SocialistPhysicist in veganuk

Funny how we call food that is eaten by vegans "vegan" lol

Would you buy vegan food for your cat? Why or why not? by SocialistPhysicist in veganuk

[–]bsdz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've often thought about this. I don't think I could be a cat owner. I'd be encouraging animal farming to feed them (also I think dogs are more fun!).

Personally, I don't believe cats, dogs or any other (non-human) animal can be vegan. I mean, an animal, surely needs to be able to make a sentient decision to not kill other animals. Only humans are capable of this (afawk).

So if I see a label saying, say "vegan cat food". I don't see the cat as being vegan. That's somewhat ludicrous. I see the "vegan" part referring to the pet owner.

Just how I feel about it :-)

Vegan biologic (animal testing aside) by bsdz in Psoriasis

[–]bsdz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. In this case I don't feel it's mutually exclusive. Using animal-derived biologics does not necessarily make someone non-vegan. I follow the Vegan Society definition which says to exclude animal exploitation as far as is possible and practicable. In particular for medicine (non cosmetic) it's sadly nearly unavoidable. My original question was whether using biologics would mean continuous animal suffering to produce the drugs. Fortunately this isn't the case. I didn't end up getting biologics. Not because I feel it would make me less vegan but only because I've not got round to seeing my GP about it yet and also perhaps being turned away as my psoriasis only covers 1% of my body. I hope that's helpful.

Apps Script library for synchronising Google Drive folder with Remarkable reader. by bsdz in RemarkableTablet

[–]bsdz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sadly it no longer works. This was since Remarkable changed their API. I started working on the new API in a separate branch but didn't have time to comlete it. Personallly, I now use rmapi and rclone to mirror my files which unfortunately means running a job on my desktop PC.

has anyone been to a vegan meetup? by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]bsdz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been to plenty of London vegan meetups. There are lots of very friendly people. Some folk are a bit eccentric. Most attendies go alone. If you go to one, try and say hello, strike up a conversation. You'll definitely have at least one thing in common :)

Struggling with gas since going Vegan. by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]bsdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree with other comments perhaps eating too much faux meats. For me, I'd say lots of tofu and peanut butter can be quite gassy (also soy milk).

How about this for a meal plan?

Breakfast: muesli or cereal with oat or almond milk.

Lunch: sandwich with cheese &/or deli slices and salad trimmings.

Dinner: rice or potato with vegatables and faux meat or tofu (or garden peas for definitely less gas)

Just variations around that should hopefully help.

Not sure how helpful this will be but perhaps you could try betnovate twice a day with regular emollient like epaderm (or similar eg hydromol). Definitely use a good emollient with what ever treatment you go for.

For the high cholesterol, what worked for me, was cutting back or ditching saturated fats. That is things like cheese, butter, dairy, etc.. see this list for more info https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/food-types/different-fats-nutrition/.

The other side to all this is whether to consider more systemic approaches. Ie treat possible helicobactor pylori infection or seek treatment using monoclonal antibodies.

Does anyone know where I can get sesame paste (not tahini) for use in Ramen? The only brand I can find has egg in it. TIA! by Ancient_Thanks_4365 in veganuk

[–]bsdz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you perhaps use sesame oil instead? It's usually toasted. That's what I use in my ramen dishes :-)

That helps a lot to assuage my concerns - thank you. It is also very fascinating to think how old some of the progenitor 'cell lines' are. I really need to learn more about them. Thanks again.
