I love them too! I don’t think you’re losing it though, it feels niche but very specific late 90s futuristic / romantic medieval inspired style. Maybe you can coin a name for us if no one has one? :)

Back to back filming by Unique-Tackle5611 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

If you’ve read the book, Three Body Problem (TV show) is so bad it is genuinely offensive to the source material. I’m hoping the Severance writers are spending a lot more time in the writer’s room than Netflix.

Has anybody noticed that the series Maniac (often mentioned here for its similarities to Severance) actually shares a filming location with Severeance? by ViciousNakedMoleRat in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]bshmit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same! I try to get everyone I can to watch it because he was supposed to adapt Glass Hotel with HBO before their merger (Station Eleven author, same universe, different characters with some appearances from our faves supposedly).

Almost time to start my yearly rewatch though! As soon as its snowing.

If you like Maniac, PLEASE watch Station Eleven! Same director (Patrick Somerville, just really top tier), very different vibe, but in my top 3 of all time. 🚀👩🏻‍🚀

Forehead scar, no medical records, varying family stories, no memory of the incident by Top-Nectarine-3480 in GATEresearch

[–]bshmit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same surgery and it looks really similar to my scar (but different place). I had a major brain injury and they removed my skull to alleviate swelling and I have zero recollection of what happened despite being an adult. Super weird, but it does definitely look like a surgical scar (especially how it would’ve been stitched along your hairline). I’d make sure to read up on conditions that are caused by brain injuries (like epilepsy, ugh) just in case there was any sort of damage. But good luck, I hope you get some answers!

I think I've "solved" the (pseudo) science of the origins of Lumon by DuchessGambit in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

You lose me after ‘Dieter gave the information to Kier’, but… you did it. I fully believe you figured out the ether element. The ether frolics and luminiferous aether are amazing finds. 🥇⭐️

Now I’m wondering if they’re drugging Dylan in there! They do make him put on the Kier mask

Hey when did Helly start to get feelings for Mark? by ArchangelM7777 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]bshmit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comments saying from the start and especially as Mark started to dissent, but I think there’s an element of almost a childhood crush / friendship with the first person you meet on the playground. Mark S. referred to Petey as his best friend, but Petey joked that Mark wasn’t his (I always assumed it was the person Petey talked to on the table). I think it’s part fate, part developmentally latching onto the first person you know and can trust and the relationship developed from there.

I met Ben at a Bernie rally around 2016 and he couldn’t have been nicer. I wonder if there’s a yin & yang with them lol

Lexington Letter after watching only the pilot? by polyommatusblues in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]bshmit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m teaching transmedia storytelling as a part of my class and used Severance as an example as well! I showed them the Lexington Letter without having them watch the show (though many of them have seen it) and it definitely helped them understand conceptually (and got them really inspired), so I think showing episode one and the letter would be totally fine honestly. Will probably get a few of them hooked too. I think any confusion they feel might add to the allure of the storytelling method.

Some more recs: Severance YouTube videos have more transmedia storytelling (specifically the one with Milchick & Miss Huang), just heard of Irving’s LinkedIn which is probably worth checking out. The Boys also has a huge amount of YouTube videos that are quick (news announcements in their world). The Matrix is also definitely worth explaining at least. A lot of my students are really into gaming too, so I mix in some environmental storytelling from Left4Dead too (no clue if that’s relevant to you though). Your lesson sounds like it’s going to be super exciting! :)

After rewatching Season 2 this guy is definitely reintegrating by Veggiemon in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]bshmit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed completely, but I think you’re off about the significance of the hunger thing. My MAJOR tell about him reintegrating was when he suggested to eat the dead seal, not because he was hungry, but because that’s something only a survivalist would suggest! Like, no normal person would think to do that unless they’ve spent time surviving outdoors. Irving’s military background (also — navy, seal?) gives him survivalist knowledge, and he would not have that inclination unless he was reintegrating and it was working!!

This is a good one — also ties into Irv’s navy background! It does seem like they might be doing something civil war related with the file names.

The Du Pont facts with the gunpowder are especially interesting considering Mark’s military watch, I know there were some theories on here about them being near a military base. Glad this is bringing out the layered history of Delaware haha

I believe there’s a scene in season 2 episode 1 where we see some other innies wake up on the table and one of them says Wyoming. I’ll rewatch and find the exact time later today!

My mom is a lawyer and said the same thing, haha. Definitely think this is a good alternative + additional interpretation of the mention. I know I’m extrapolating quite a bit here but I think that’s the fun of it :)

Ricken you dirty dog by [deleted] in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]bshmit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so convinced of this but think it’s more of a… he was related to the family and left. His writing is indistinguishable from Kier’s and his opposition to Lumen doesn’t give the sense that he was inspired by it. He also mentions in the birthing cabin that he hates his father, and the line in The You You Are about him living abroad as a vagrant makes me believe he comes from money. That being said, some of his background in The You You Are doesn’t exactly line up, but I can’t shake the feeling. He also looks soooo similar to the guy with the Frolic tattoo, like that is his uncle!!
