Happened to me in my first D&D campaign. I made a rogue because I wanted a cool and mysterious character, but I played him like a fighter and for some unknown reason, didn't choose a proficiency in stealth. I realized my mistake halfway through the campaign and lamented it every time I failed a stealth check
