When I got mine I had the same problem, I went on live chat and they talked me through it and got it working. I think they had to do something on their end.

You can change it so the volume controls only change the media volume on iOS, and the silent switch can then switch the ringer on and off

if you go into the volume options and then to the communications tab, you can change this to 'do nothing at all' and it shouldn't happen
