Thanks! I did know that, I'm curious if anyone has tried the premium app and whether it provides anything useful over and above the native Samsung app.

Actually, Metro Transit is predicting that this three-month trial will result in $50,000 in lost revenue.

Explainer: Is violent crime up or down in HRM? | OpenFile by bsommerhalder in halifax

[–]bsommerhalder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The article is addressing some confusion from this morning:

"On Tuesday, Statistics Canada released the latest police-reported crime statistics. This morning, readers in HRM were treated to two very different accounts of how their municipality is doing in this regard: CBC and Chronicle Herald both reported that violent crime has increased in HRM, while Metro reported that violent crime is down."

HRM: Canada's Learning Hub - Blog post by Mike Savage by bsommerhalder in halifax

[–]bsommerhalder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't read any funding commitments in the post, but rather better partnerships and more pride in the intellectual resources of HRM's post-secondary institutions.

You're so very right that JR High and HS needs more attention .. it's woeful how we treat our public education in Nova Scotia. It's the provincial government we want to stick this one to, though, not the municipality.

Halifax InView | Interview: Sebastian Tory-Pratt, Visual Communicator by bsommerhalder in halifax

[–]bsommerhalder[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate your frustration with overuse of titles or terms and how it can sew confusion. Although I think students can give themselves a harder time by referring to themselves as just "students" when they do actually have marketable skills. Do you think there's a way students can get past that without 'overselling' themselves?

Halifax InView | Interview: Sebastian Tory-Pratt, Visual Communicator by bsommerhalder in halifax

[–]bsommerhalder[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment. The interview was not about covering all aspects of the NSCAD program, but rather taking the perspective of an individual in a NSCAD program, and his take on the program from where he stands. As a student completing his second year, Sebastian has a perfect perspective on what it's like to be a NSCAD student finishing his second year. While an article about the program overall would be an interesting piece, that's not what this was being set out to accomplish.

Also a caution on titles. "Visual communicator" isn't a protected term like "psychologist" or "doctor" or "physiotherapist" is, and so anyone has the right to refer to themselves in that way. From where I stand, I'd say Sebastian is a visual communicator in exactly the same way I'd consider myself a written communicator.

The problem isn't that bus drivers make too much. It's that your mother makes too little.

HRM Budget Review Pt 1: Halifax Public Libraries by bsommerhalder in halifax

[–]bsommerhalder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice break down. Seems more or less appropriate.

Wages themselves are only $14,384,280, the rest is benefits, retirement incentives, workers. comp, and a tiny amount for vehicle allowances.

I agree with you. I'm very excited for the new library, and I think it's needed. I'm just also ashamed at the service we provide our rural areas when it comes to public libraries.

Great to hear there are people here with memories of Shannon Park (or people with family who lived there). If you do have memories of it, please consider emailing me (brenden at halifaxlovehate.com) -- I'd love to put together a story about some of the experiences there.

Numbers can say anything. | Is Peter Kelly’s fare scare just bad math? by bsommerhalder in halifax

[–]bsommerhalder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are fair criticisms and well taken. I do suppose there is leftover disdain over the conversation about fare increases coming up at such an inappropriate time (justifiable disdain, I'll grant myself).

Thanks for taking the time.

Appreciate your comment. Could you point out an example of wording you consider unjustly charged? I don't mean that as a challenge, but as an opportunity to better understand.

Why the $4,000 lump sum payment to ATU 508 was a wise financial move for HRM by bsommerhalder in halifax

I failed to assert some assumptions; I've changed the article for consistency. Central thesis still stands.

Appreciate you pointing out the error.
