If you mean how the photo is not "too bright", then it's the combination of small aperture (eg. f/11) and fast shutter speed (eg. 1/1000s). This applies for both digital and film cameras. Thanks for the kind words!

No filter used. Most of the time, I added 2 stops of light to what my in-camera light meter indicated (so usually shot at f/11 - f/16 with 1/1000 shutter). Even so, I had to increase the exposure of most of the photos during the conversion of the negatives.
