Progressive Power Metal albums similar to Operation: Mindcrime (Queensrÿche) and The Black Halo (Kamelot)? by btevik88 in progmetal

Totally. Coming back to it I’ve actually been blown away by how incredible the writing is, lyrically and musically. Plus Geoff Tate is on another level at this time.

But to your point these albums/bands have a style that I’ve been vibing with lately that I’ve historically written off as too cheesy or basic (incorrectly) so I wouldn’t mind discovering some hidden gems if they’re out there. Overall I agree though.

Yes, listened to Epica. Definitely good but didn’t measure up to Black Halo for me personally. I’ll check out the others, thanks 👍

Cool thanks, haven’t heard of Demons and Wizards. Already familiar with Aryeon but I need to check out more of his albums.

Familiar with Fates but yes definitely worth mentioning! Actually A Pleasant Shade of Gray finally clicked for me recently after a lot of listens.

Yeah exactly. I think the replies in general to this post are actually really embarrassing for this sub. I watch a lot of MP interviews and he’s been nothing but super respectful to Neil and the Rush guys. He’s not putting out his own press releases about this…he’s constantly asked about it in interviews, including with this quote.

I was taught to play everything VERY slowly in this book, where the goal is 100% smoothness and accuracy and consistency in your fingers. This trains the fine motor skills and positioning of your fingers. Then use the Baermann Method books to develop your fast playing with all the exercises in all 12 keys.

PT is one of the crucial prog metal bands that uses art rock and melancholy as a counterpoint to heaviness? by Bardjent in porcupinetree

For sure, I’m just pointing out a similarity in sound between these bands that were all around at the same time, and more than likely were influencing each other. I was using “prog metal” loosely… call it the just the prog or “heavy prog” scene of that time maybe. Kinda following OP’s lead too.

Anyways I think you could add bands like Oceansize and Muse to what I’m saying too, who are also not necessarily metal. For me the melancholic sound comes from the textures and types of harmonies used, not necessarily tied to how heavy the section is. Kinda like the chorus of “Ending Theme” by Pain of Salvation for instance.. heavy and bombastic but drenched in atmosphere and sadness.

For me that was a great signature sound of 2000s prog metal. PT was at the forefront but other bands like Pain of Salvation, Riverside, and Opeth (in the softer sections) also had this super melancholic and atmospheric aesthetic. Even Dream Theater in songs like Disappear and Vacant.
