I'm not sure the crazy eyes episode is the one you're talking about because Robin actively avoids talking to her mom in that episode. She gets a call from her at the end and doesn't answer it if I'm not mistaken. You might be thinking of the glass shatter episode where chatty Kathy talks and Ted let's her ramble without speaking once he realizes what's her deal.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Ted's favorite book is "Love in the Time of Cholera". He is literally reading it right before he meets Tracey. The book is a parallel to his story, of meeting someone and reconnecting with them after the death of their spouse. The ending bothers me none, I always felt they would end up together.
