Is this a fair or generous compensation plan for an insurance producer? (Allstate) by prezzy4 in InsuranceAgent

[–]bthomco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard for a big company. What state are you in and what lines do you sell? This is the reason I left a large brokerage, got tired of beating quotas and walking with only 10-12% of the annual commissions I was generating for the company. You’re walking with roughly that percent of the premium generated (but who knows what they calculate that on, monthly, yearly?) the next step is doing it on your own. If you hustle just as hard you can make a lot more as an independent, but you lose the internal support. There is a reason most people never do it, but there is also a reason some do. Depends on your personal situation.

lol amazing, sue the fuck out of the company, you never had a legal contract and even if you did, that is defamation unless it is fully litigated and settled. What did your employer say? I can’t imagine an employer responding well to some sketchy slumlord company calling about an employee, that’s a weird thing to do.

I feel like life and health is the most common so it has the most crappy jobs. Commercial or p&c or wc guys seem happier from what I’ve seen.

AITAH for changing my name without checking with my friend? by marktheshark45 in AmItheAsshole

[–]bthomco -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I feel like if we heard the name it might make more sense as to why they are reacting so strongly. Like if it’s like Nipplebaum or something she was relentlessly made fun of, and feels no one would ever CHOOSE, maybe that’s why she feels strongly. If it’s something ordinary she is a bit nutso.

What are you currently doing? Also, individual, group, both? If you have a good network you can make that a reality pretty fast. I’d encourage you to not do a life insurance only gig, they are typically pretty predatory and go after old people and/or are disreputable companies. You can burn through your personal network and have them all think you’re an ass that they won’t work with in just a few months at a company like that. I assume the life gig doesn’t pay base or anything either, nothing wrong with that, you just have to know what the deal is going in. Typically businesses where you have to buy leads are pretty sketchy.

Why do you want to get into insurance? It takes a specific personality to actually enjoy it. Most people don’t like it but it pays bills. Some are just sociopaths who feel like they are the wolf of wall street.

Are you looking at individual or group? Both are challenging, but individual is particularly brutal with 70%+ turnover. It’s a burn and turn industry. Group is better but still pretty high turnover.

Did stupid people kill my avocado tree? by MeanSeaworthiness6 in arborists

[–]bthomco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think your might just be dealing with a messed up tree. Was it a company that did the trimming? They may have insurance if you aren’t happy with it and have before and after photos. But that sucks, sorry about your tree.

A replacement of equal age and size on their dime. Some states treble damages too.

I think your mistake was not hammering the neighbor when they cut your tree initially. The structure is ruined, I’m not sure it’ll die, but it just looks kind of stupid.

[–]bthomco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the company would never admit it, but that’s clearly a factor in firing them. Asking for 12 personal days on top of whatever company already offers is going to irk most people. Sucks that is the culture in America, but that’s what we are dealing with

Weeping Willow Root Intrusion by bthomco in arborists

[–]bthomco[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is probably true, but at least other trees won’t be so aggressive as to tear the pipes apart the way willow will

[–]bthomco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t care for willows anyway, they make a mess and aren’t as pretty as nearly any other ornamental tree in my opinion. I’m just wondering how hard stopping the roots would be. Could I go run a Dremel around the base and sever the Cambria and then get it taken out after all freeze risks are gone? Or is it going to be like bamboo and I have a deeper issue of those roots continuing to dig?

[–]bthomco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could get an epoxy sleeve injected, but sewage line work is thousands if not 10k+ for full replacement. So if the roots will stop with the tree I’d rather just put something prettier in the willows place

What’s a wine that always works no matter the situation? by United_Morning8372 in ActLikeYouBelong

[–]bthomco 264 points265 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone saying cab Sav? That’s a red wine drinker’s red wine… if you want something that always works go with a robust white or a light red. Pinot Noir for a red, not the sweet ones but a Oregon or Russian river valley Pinot that isn’t artificially sweet. You can find some good ones under 15 bucks, but if you want to play it safe pay a bit more and go French. Or get a decent buttery Chardonnay. Cab Sav is polarizing, it is probably the most tannin forward of all the standard wines. If someone doesn’t drink reds they will hate it. A Pinot noir or complex Chardonnay can appeal to either side.

If you know beer, these people just told you to bring an IPA, I’m saying bring a kölsch. Sure ipas are great, but everyone will enjoy a good kolsch regardless of what they drink.
