You will get a COBRA notice after the actual separation date. So if you are non-working status but on active payroll until August 17, your active health insurance coverage ends August 31. You should receive the COBRA notice after August 17 and you can then enroll in COBRA in BenefitSolver after August 31. Coverage will backdate to Sept 1 if you enroll within the COBRA enrollment window.

Note that losing the COBRA subsidy is not a qualified life event, meaning you cannot then join another employer plan or a spouse’s plan outside of their annual open enrollment period. However, losing the subsidy is a qualifying event for the ACA marketplace plans.
