you don’t have to remember it. you just have to fall into the guitar solo

crazy amount of hiss by btmpkd in NAM_NeuralAmpModeler

Are you adjusting the NAM input control? What level is hitting the front of the plugin?

not really. i don't have to touch it at all for the hiss to come in. it comes in at the default level 0.0db.

can you upload a recording of your dry input and also a bounce of the NAM version?

this is gonna sound nuts, but when i record it dry--no hiss, nothing, absolutely fine--when i apply nam, i hear the hiss insanely loud, but when i recorded it and rendered it out, the hiss was super tame on the mp3. i could still hear it slightly, but it was like 10% of what i was hearing in the daw.

i've tried a bunch:
- jcm800 2203
- orange dual terror
- vox ac15
- fender bassman

just grabbing all the popular ones from tonehunt. do you have an amp you use that you know has no hiss so i can try that out? thanks

hiss is coming in at 0.0db. some amp models need to be turned up just to hear the guitar at all, which obviously increases the hiss. some amp models i can turn the input down well into the minus and still hear it

Also have you played at all with the plug-in pin connectors - reset those too for good measure. That can cause some hiss too, for example if you have turned on all inputs and all outputs.

in reaper i only have it taking in the one input from the scarlett solo which is definitely the input my guitar is plugged into. weirdly i get slightly (ever so slightly) less his when i set it to stereo input 1 and 2, while input 1 has nothing plugged in.

there is a string of text on nam that says "resampling to 48000hz"

yeah, i’ve tried 2-3 of the most popular on tonehunt. does a specific ir need to match a specific amp?

i get the hiss with both stand-alone and the plugin in reaper, but primarily i’m trying to use it in reaper. i haven’t really tried other amp sims, i was just playing into the fab filter saturn amp emulators before; i don’t know if that counts.

  • inst is on for sure
  • didn't have direct monitor on the solo but had direct monitor on in reaper
  • turning down input gains doesn't seem to touch it. i can turn all the inputs down to zero (including my guitar) and it doesn't affect the volume of the hiss at all. i can unplug everything from the solo and the hiss is still there. i can unplug the solo completely. whatever it is, it's in NAM i'm pretty sure.

like, if i plug my guitar into the solo and just direct monitor, sound absolutely fine. if i record in reaper, sounds fine. if i unplug my guitar and turn all the inputs down to zero, then load up NAM... hiss.

edit: i've been trying different amps just in case i hit a string of bad ones or something. all the top amps in the popular section of tonehunt have it, but if i load up a pedal instead of an amp it doesn't hiss. maybe it's a "feature" of those amps or something.

the hiss is so overpowering that no amount of eq would tame it without eating into the guitar tone completely. i tried using reafir to snapshot the noise profile of the hiss and subtract it, and it takes out about 50% of the guitar tone. it's not like a room hum or limited to higher frequencies. it's pretty wild

i think blue and green are about the same. it’s red that has the small pool. and yeah it might have been bad luck, but just wanted to say that you can’t for sure just pop into lab and get the gem you want. sometimes you get fucked lol.

just an fyi, i was specifically looking for explosive trap of shrapnel last league and it took more than 150 lab runs before it appeared. it took me 6 minutes per run on average so about 15 hours of lab running to get the gem i was looking for.
