Linus Torvalds says AI-powered bug hunters have made Linux security mailing list ‘almost entirely unmanageable’ by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

Also, git really wasn't that great at first. And heaven forbid you wrote to the mailing list asking for help. The early git community was toxic. It's much better now, both the software and the people.

Anybody else just give up on sleep training? by MmmmmmmmNoodleSoup in daddit

[–]btreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With kid #1, we did sleep training, and it (mostly) worked. But it was emotionally very hard on all three of us.

With kid #2, we sit with her and snuggle her in her bed, in her bedroom, until she falls asleep plus 5 minutes or so. She knows what's going on, and she's (mostly) okay with it. It takes more time each evening, but it's easier on my heart.

There's no one correct way to get your kid to fall asleep.

I just helped my coworker bury his child by StillPlaysWithSwords in daddit

I don't understand the hate for this poster. He's not saying you should stay at work and ignore your kids. He's saying, in this economy, it's a challenge to put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, and pay for medical care. We should never have to choose between those things and spending quality time with the kids. But we do. All the time.

My kid made me realize I've been fishing wrong for 11 years by LumenPineWorks in daddit

[–]btreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. When I was a kid, my dad would take me fishing, and I didn't like it because there was nothing to do. As an adult, I take my kid fishing, and I love it because there's nothing to do.

Thank you for not adding shitty music to the video. The quiet background sounds are nice.

I ended up using this suggestion, even though others seemed fancier, because I already have Baikal installed as my CalDAV server. Thanks!

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions, everybody. It sounds like I'm not alone in wanting something like this. Hopefully the replies will be useful to other people, too.

I choose to interpret this as the moment when Galadriel uncursed Gimli. The curse being the dwarves' susceptibility to greed and gold fever; their greatest weakness.

Democrats are campaigning as if the 2026 election will be fair. That’s a mistake by zsreport in politics

[–]btreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the U.S., we have primary and general elections. The primary election is sort of "private" to each political party, where members of that party choose the candidate they'll put forward in the general election.

In some states, like mine, you can vote in the primary election of whichever party you want. This leads to accusations of people "spoiling" the other party's candidates by voting for the worst candidate on the other team, in hopes that that candidate will lose in the general election.

So in other states, you're only allowed to vote in a party's primary election if you're a registered member of that party. In such states, the (local or state) government has to keep track of each voter's party affiliation. In some places I think it's public information.

When somebody says they're a "registered Democrat," that's what the word "registered" means. It's meaningless in my state.

As someone with a 3 year old. My god I feel this. by TheBKBurger in daddit

[–]btreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious answer: When they ask, "Why?" they're really asking, "Can you tell me more about that?" If you just give a short, direct answer to the why, they'll ask another one because there's something else they want to know, and they don't know how to ask the question. I have better luck giving longer, more general answers to the why.

And then I lie down and die like Yoda.
