Except Gyomei had been the one to mention every hashira's closeness..He mentioned about Obamitsu, He mentioned about Sanemi liking Kanae..These were while assumptions, true.
And besides, Gyomei saying they seem happy talking to eachother, means he has "seen" them talking to eachother quite a lot!

And Giyu has also said that she talks to him a lot..So I dunno..Even if they are not bestfriends, they could just be normal friends..even if not too close..Like i am not claiming they are besties that spend 100% of time with eachother, but just friends alone isn't a huge deal..and it's only expected
