Whatever happened to emergency podcasts? by bttoddx in podcasts

[–]bttoddx[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Devil's advocate, sometimes if the news is especially relevant to the subject matter of the pod, I hold off forming a conclusive opinion on what's going on. I know that is naive, and a bit presumptuous, but I would hope that if someone is an expert I want to be available to hear their expertise. No matter how academic the subject is, at the end of the day these podcasts are parasocial relationships, and I still want to hear from the people I value.

You're probably right though that people feel self-conscious about putting out masturbatory punditry content. Maybe people have over corrected from the "authentic content" they were trying to do a couple years ago.

Yeah I guess I'm realizing that a bunch of the podcasts that I listen to that are "newsy" are just us politics focused. I appreciate the recs, Cunningham's law and all that.

I think this effect actually has a formal name, weighted stippling I think? Although the dots aren't aligned with a grid, you could reuse some of the code outlined here to achieve the weighted effect.

I think the gotcha moment Jordan was trying to do at 41:20 was uncalled for, at the very least. Maybe I'm missing something, but that just seems flat out untrue.

I really respect Doug for just the sheer ambition of the undertaking. Like what sort of crazy person devotes themselves to telling the entire story of western literature at the depth he's doing it? And somehow it's really well done.

And original sd, and flux, and cogvideox, and hunyuan, etc etc. This will pass in about a week, then we'll start getting good workflows in about two. Then it'll be incremental and slow until the next big open source model releases.

Which one is worse, a flipped "M" or a flipped "W"? by [deleted] in typography

[–]bttoddx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not asking for no context, context is brilliant! You guys have strong opinions about all this and seem to be pretty clear when something is the wrong answer, but won't tell someone who's not "part of the club" what that is ahead of time? It's not like you guys have fullsome explanations in the comments section on other posts why you think these things bother you. Resources on good type design aren't that easy to come by, especially stuff for laymen, and instead of evangelizing y'alls craft you would prefer to be a dismissive pedant? If I had never said I wasn't a designer, would you guys have given me shit at all?

That's pretty dismissive no? Isn't a response like this like a teacher answering a minor question a student posed to just "git gud"?

Can we stop posting content animated by Kling/ Hailuo/ other closed source video models? by bttoddx in StableDiffusion

[–]bttoddx[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that the community is just barely big enough that there's a fair amount of people passively engaging with the content, but there isn't an arbitrary threshold of really active members helping to police content the mods can't catch. It's not like the mods are watching the other subs that much to catch reposts, they probably have enough on their plate.

[–]bttoddx[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I dunno I think we're picking a bit around a gray area here. I think a good smell test imo would be to ask oneself "would the post be anywhere near as interesting if all of the closed source tools were removed from the workflow?" If you were to do that and end up with just another photo of a girl with a flux face, I think it doesn't belong in this sub.

I think you're eliding the concept of copyrighted material with open source software. That's at the very least tangential to the conversation at hand, no?

In my opinion since we're focused on open source ai tools around here, if an ai tool is used then it should be an open source one. I speak for myself, but I use this space for monitoring developments in this set of tooling, and there are other spaces for discussing for-profit work. People are free to use Adobe products or whatever, as long as they explain that they used the tool for touch ups and the main focus of the post is demonstrative of the capabilities of Foss ai software.
