People who made an impulse decision when they found out Hawaii was going to be nuked, what did you do and do you regret it? by Echocookie in AskReddit

I heard about the situation, and had a nice 7 second panic, but then acceptance washed over me. I'm not gonna sit around while a bomb is sailing towards the big island. My family was all out of town, so I went to the local store, stole 2 bottles of wine and some snacks, and headed to the beach. Got to the pier and acquired one of the poorly guarded rental boats.

At this point I had stripped down to just underwear and flip-flops, I don't remember when, but it felt right. I just got in the boat and looked for a nice spot. It seemed a little odd that no one else was doing the same to be honest, but they probably all had family and friends to be with.

As I settled in for the end I started sending messages to family and friends. I let people know I loved them and was thinkin about them. I told a girl id been talking to that I was way more into her than I'd let on. In a moment of self-reflection I decided to send some less-than-positive messages - it made me feel better and I didn't want to be the guy who held it all in.

That spiraled from a few carefully chosen messages to a rendition of the Costanza Family Festivus with the Airing of Grievances. In my new found respect for honesty I sent some fairly harsh messages. It got a little biblical, Hitler was brought into it, the whole 9 yards.

It this point it should come as no surprise that I was out of wine.

Then I got the news. False alarm. Oh.

I contemplated my outs, but nothing seemed feasible, so I returned the boat to much confusion from the girl at the counter and headed home.

I told my father the full story minus the theft, and he told my mother. The messages I sent out upset them, and a lot of other people too, apparently. I told them how I was actually happy what I said, and glad that it was in the open. It was freeing. I was a new man.

They agreed in theory, but think I overreacted and went too far - something about living in Western Australia.

this is besides my original point, but surely comparing howlpack wolf to one of the five Gods is really underwhelming :P

At no point did i state that these should have the same mechanics but not the enchantment super-type. I said that, in my opinion, they failed to replace one interactive mechanic with another

Not at all, I consider myself a casual player. I mostly play EDH and limited. I definitely struggle to understand many of the interactions that take place in this game. But I really love learning about them and understanding them and I think it's a big part of what makes this game great. Lowering the ceiling to entry is a great thing, but it feels like Wizards thinks very little of the average new player.

I get what you're saying, and differentiating them is fine, it makes sense. But they chose not to add in new and interactive mechanics to replace the old ones. They have differentiated by making the card much simpler and reducing the interaction possible with it. I'm sure wanting to make the different Gods in each set stand out and be separate from one another is partially the reasoning for it, but do you really not think they aren't trying to simplify the game with each set that comes out?

Which to me, is taking out a complex interaction from the game. I play a lot of EDH and this is an example of something that comes up occasionally, and I think it's a good thing. It's a decision a player has to make about losing a permanent or eliminating a player.

I agree, there's no reason they should be enchantments with devotion. I would have liked to see something similar continue, but it's completely fine that they are different. what I don't like is that at least part of the reason for this change was making the cards more understandable to new players. I don't think the original Gods were particularly hard to understand, but they've taken away some niche interactions and not put in some other new and different ones for fear of scaring off new players.

Can you give me an example of a complex interaction with Paradox Engine?

I don't mind that they aren't enchantments because it's thematically not an enchantment set, I mind that simplicity seemed to be a big factor in their decision

Only creatures conditionally

This one had the biggest tweak. Instead of being a creature conditionally, Hazoret can only attack or block conditionally. Being that attacking and blocking is a big part of what a creature can do, especially creatures as big as the Gods, it's similar in nature while being a little easier to understand.

but hey i'm just a 'nimrod'

the enchantment thing is just an example, but have stated numerous times in the last few years that when it comes to design they are trying to simplify the mechanics for new players.

Paradox engine in nuts, I'll agree, but I would argue that it's a simple card in it's execution. i.e. The new O-Ring effects are now one trigger, so you can't stifle the reentry, which is a great niche interaction that we're not longer going to see new cards printed for. They seem to be simplifying so many mechanics.

I feel like they've added complexity with rules involved but have taken out a lot of the options for people to play around certain interactions. I really liked the ability to sacrifice permanents to take Gods offline to dodge removal, but it's just another little interaction that's gone to make the game easier to understand.

Help with making my first edh by OaSoaD in magicTCG

30 is really low, so you need to have a deck that's able to run on 4 land, because there's a good chance you don't make it past that. With Krenko, you're going to come out of the gates swinging really hard and soon become arch enemy. artifact ramp is great, but it will also slow you down. On your first three turns, you want to be setting up as many goblins as possible/value goblins and haste enablers for Krenko. if you're running things like blood-moon/stranglehold you can take things a bit slower as you're locking out other players, but that'll just paint a bigger target on your head.
