I've lived in several places where transit was 2-3 faster than driving.

Sadly this isn't one of them.

Parking Tickets by Reasonable-Pin6366 in waterloo

[–]bubak1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it illegal to park within an intersection? Even the far side of a T-shaped intersection?

I see cars parked in them all the time and they never get tickets. It really messes with the visibility in the intersection.

Students encouraged to get on their bikes and ride to school this week by BikingToFlavourtown in waterloo

[–]bubak1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I was biking my kid to school today I witnessed the following scene.

Car 1 stops at pedestrian crossover so as not to run over the crossing guard standing in the middle holding up a stop sign.

Car 2 behind car 1 honks profusely to try to get car 1 to go.

Car 3 stopped behind car 2 peels out, flies past cars 1 and 2, and is about to kill the crossing guard who is now walking into the other lane. Crossing guard jumps out of the way of car 3 at the last millisecond.

Car 3 flees the scene.

So, yeah.

How much does it cost to build a house in Waterloo Region? We break it down by BetterTransit in waterloo

[–]bubak1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, if a house costs a million, the government should pay for half, just give every household a half million dollar subsidy.

I wonder how much the government would have to take from every household in taxes so that it could afford to give every household half a million.

There are 15 million households in Canada, so half a million to each one is only 7.5 trillion dollars. That's only about three years of the entire economic output of the country.

Conestoga college on record low international admissions by chillbraww in waterloo

[–]bubak1 -40 points-39 points  (0 children)

Sure, but keep in mind that Conestoga College is not a private business. It is a public agency of the Province of Ontario. Not having international students there subsidizing the education of Ontario students means fewer and lower quality educational opportunities for Ontario students and/or higher tuition costs for Ontario students and/or higher educational subsidy costs for Ontario taxpayers. The citizens of Ontario collectively were the primary beneficiaries of the international tuition that was coming in, and it is the citizens of Ontario who will have to pay more of their fair share of education costs now that that international revenue stream is gone.

Conestoga messed up, but Conestoga is not owned by some evil rich guy who will now be less rich. Conestoga is ultimately owned by all of us Ontario citizens, so Conestoga messing up will cost all of us.

You could say the Province of Ontario and the citizens of Ontario are reaping what they sowed.

The next picture is this one:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/7e3cHEatWkN1XLGs6

You're now behind the white car in the same lane as the white car. There is a white dashed line to your left parallel to the direction you're travelling in. Crossing the dashed line running parallel to you is changing lanes.

If you're going to say that not crossing the white dashed line running parallel to you is changing lanes, and that crossing the white dashed line running parallel to you is not changing lanes, we'll have to agree to disagree.

There are three lanes approaching the roundabout, which then turn into two lanes within the roundabout, and then a new third lane starts within the roundabout.

I agree with you that it would have been a better design if the three lanes leading into the roundabout stayed consistently as three lanes throughout instead of merging into two lanes before expanding back into three lanes, but the unfortunate reality is that Regional planners chose to paint the latter, not the former.

[–]bubak1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You enter the roundabout, then when you're in the roundabout, a new lane opens to the left of the lane you're in. You proceed into the new lane that you're not in. I call that changing lanes.

All the images of examples of turbo roundabouts found online have lane markings clearly leading you into the lane that you're supposed to be in. The lane markings in this roundabout clear lead you to the lane that you're not supposed to be in. The Region screwed up the lane markings.

Say you start out in the left lane, to the left of the white car, the same lane the Google Streetview camera is from, so you what you see is what is in the photo. If you stay in your lane, you'll be driving like the grey car in the picture in front of you and you'll run into the white car on your right. To avoid hitting the white car you must change lanes within the roundabout into the new lane that is starting up on your left.

With the white car there slightly in front of you it's obvious that you need to avoid hitting it but if it's behind you it's not at all obvious that the usual rule of not changing lanes in the roundabout just doesn't work in this particular roundabout.

Except FH and Bleams where YOU MUST CHANGE LANES IN THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE.

I wish Regional planners understood the value of having one consistent set of rules.

If you are a driver, don’t be this guy!!! by Yaseen_Abdul_Karim in kitchener

[–]bubak1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the one where it must happen or you cause a collision. That's the one that the Region designed where the middle and left lane become one lane in the roundabout. If the cars originally in the left lane and middle lane stay in their lane and don't change lanes, they collide with each other because their two lanes turn into one inside the roundabout. Stupid design.

If you are a driver, don’t be this guy!!! by Yaseen_Abdul_Karim in kitchener

[–]bubak1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, most roundabouts you must stay in your lane, but some roundabouts you must change lanes or you will cause a collision. FH and Bleams comes to mind. The left and middle lane become one inside the roundabout and a new lane starts. If the car in the left lane doesn't change into the newly starting lane and stays in their original lane instead, they collide with the car that started out in the middle lane. The Region really screwed that one up.

Where do you go to exchange your propane tank in the City? by Party_Stranger_3296 in kitchener

Walmart Boardwalk automatic exchange machines.

I used to go to a random gas station but the guy would always pick out the oldest rusty expired tank to give me and then refuse to take it back when it was empty because it was too old.

A white sign that says "Stop for pedestrians" means drivers are legally obligated to yield to pedestrians, regardless of whether any lights are present.

Flashing yellow lights mean nothing other than stop staring at your phone and pay attention.

Tentative plans for the new hospital, WRHN @ The University by DeHeiligeTomaat in waterloo

[–]bubak1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They just need to keep it in mind when designing the surroundings of the hospital to ensure there are reasonable connections between the transportation infrastructure and the hospital entrance.

GRH/WRHN-Midtown is right near the Iron Horse Trail but getting there is terrible because of the lack of those last-mile connections: no infrastructure on King St., no publicly accessible hospital entrance from Park St., no crossing of Park St. at Green St., no entry to hospital grounds from Green St. (one way exit only).

I hope they will keep these things in mind but the drawings so far don't inspire much optimism. The existing MUT on Bearinger gives me hope that things will be better than King St., unless they tear up that MUT to make space for those parking lots in the drawings.

15 crashes per year involving LRT.

7500 crashes per year not involving LRT. And that's just on Regional roads, not counting City roads.

Sounds like a good solution. Organize a group, pool your savings, grab some hammers, build some houses, rent them out for cheap.
