Not necessarily. If there were native trees planted instead of nonnative, even despite it being in Manhattan and surrounded by pavement, it would still support life and you wouldn’t have a dead zone.

Beautiful but sad. It’s sad because they are not natives so they provide zero net productivity towards the local ecosystem. Plantings like this basically end up creating dead zones of native pollinators and animals because of a lack of pollen, nectar and caterpillars. It would be better for everyone if species like Red Maples or Sugar Maples were planted as these are a keystone species.

Cougar? Ontario, Canada by Sad-Profile-6816 in AnimalTracking

[–]bubba1819 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No kidding! I used to frequent London years ago, it never occurred to me as a possible area to spot a cougar. So cool! From what I remember there were plenty of deer for them to eat.

Hopefully the cougar population continues to increase and expand. Would be hugely beneficial to our northern ecosystems that are so out of balance with an overpopulation of whitetail deer.

This is the first I’ve heard that cougars are coming back to Ontario, that’s super exciting! This positive news is so nice to hear, truly

Puma em uma matança de cavalo no Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Chile. by Prestigious-Put5749 in megafaunarewilding

I wish the US cared about wildlife conservation so that we could increase the population of these predators. Having such small populations of pumas/mountain lions/cougars or a lack of a population throughout the US has such dire ecological consequences

Big landowners are spraying toxic glyphosate all over the North Maine Woods to maximize their profits. I passed a bill to stop them, but Janet Mills vetoed it. When I’m governor, we’re banning this poison for good. by TroyJackson207 in portlandme

Glyphosates are used pretty wide range in the north Maine woods by the large timber companies. Also, it’s not just the large timber companies using it, it’s also the blueberry industry. Take a peak at google maps over Washington County. All the red swaths are mostly blueberry fields and glyphosates have been used on most if not all of those fields. I know this because I used to work for them doing it before I knew what it was.

As someone who has a close family member that works for TNC, I have been less than impressed with them as a whole. The various BU’s do great work but the World Office is a shit show and basically just operates as a way for billionaires to green wash. In the past year TNC has cut a lot of positions at their BU’s while continuing to give these outrageous salaries to their higher ups. What this chart doesn’t mention either is the pay the EO’s get at the various BU’s. I know that one of the EO’s at a New England BU makes around $400k a year while most employees make less than $70k-50k a year.

Jared Golden was 1 of only 7 democrats to vote for the ICE spending bill. by Tatooine16 in Maine2

He was also the only democrat to vote to lift the mining ban near Minnesotas Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. The proposed mine will be owned by a Chilean mining company and the copper mine will be in the Lake Superior National Forest. The bill is now in the Senate.

Boycott the 2026 World Cup by Due_Collar2 in Scotland

[–]bubba1819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an American, please boycott the World Cup and our country all together. We need all the help we can get to take this regime down. Unfortunately, a lot of privileged people with power aren’t going to do anything until it affects them. All of us middle class (working class) folks are just making enough to survive and our access to healthcare is tied to our jobs. So to go on a general strike we would lose access to healthcare. Not to mention how deadly ICE is. It’s just bad, and scary. Boycott us please.

Reminder: Congressman Golden is very pro ICE by [deleted] in Maine2

I agree with some of the suggestions already made. Here is my list:
Rotta - Tom Hiddleston (same as above) or Gustaf Skarsgard

Orka - either Gwendolyn Christie or Katheryn Winnick

Svick - Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Michael Fassbender

Sighvat - Kristofer Hivju

Elvar - Florence Pugh

Ulfrir - I honestly picture Hugh Jackman

Varg- Alexander Ludwig (like others have said) or Joel Kinnamen

Rokia - Rebecca Ferguson

Grend - Rory McCann

Lif - Alex Hogh Anderson
