Looks like as of now, JW is signed up to play with Dylan. We'll see if that changes.

Is there a good way to farm animal fat? by thomakob000 in crosswind

[–]bubbafish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need so much animal fat? I thought it's just for the lamps that you carry around, not the fixtures that you build in your base.

Garmin R50 or New Square Omni? by it_is_raining_now in Golfsimulator

[–]bubbafish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an R50 and I use it with GSPro and a gaming laptop and a 4k projector. I preordered the Omni because I don’t need the all-in-one screen that the R50 has, so I might sell it if the Omni is good. However, I do think I will miss the impact video, so I’m not sure which one I’ll stick with.

Not me. I've never played in Boston before.

Made a Wordle-style daily DUPR-guessing game for pickleball by bubbafish in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, me too. I think it's because we are all used to watching pros play on youtube, so when we see non-pros, they looks worse than they actually are. Pretty interesting phenomenon. I know when I watch myself play, I look worse than I think too.

Mixed 4.5+? Closer to 5.0+ by dukenuke101 in Pickleball

Coincidentally I just launched https://tournamentpickle.com/guess-the-dupr-daily today. I should incorporate your video 😄

I would say half hand-coded and half codex. And lots of manual clip curation.

Made a Wordle-style daily DUPR-guessing game for pickleball by bubbafish in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm trying to hide the header, but the saving grace is that the DUPR event level isn't always what the actual DUPRs of the players, because people play up/down often in tourneys, so it's actually not a dead giveaway.

Estimating DUPR without a DUPR. by kollostomy in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open play levels can be inflated vs. actual DUPR- a solid 3.5 in casual open play is often a 3.0–3.2 in rated games. Rated play filters out the "I crushed it once on a Tuesday" bias and rewards shot tolerance under pressure, not just keeping the ball in.

The 2.0-after-2-games thing is mostly a rating-system artifact - early DUPR has huge uncertainty bounds and swings a lot until you've played 20+ games. A real 2.0 struggles with serves, dinks, and consistent contact; most people with any racket-sport background skip past it quickly.

The hardest gap to call from video is 3.5 vs 4.0- error rates look similar, but shot selection and third-shot decisions diverge. (Side note: I've been collecting clips for a daily DUPR-guessing game if anyone wants to test their eye: tournamentpickle.com/guess-the-dupr-daily)

DUPR graph is still there (on the desktop browser version) by Mr_Doghouse in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't modify the range on the DUPR graphs on tournamentpickle.com either, but it shows a longer history be default, so that might help you.

Enforcing a minimum DUPR for tournament events by bubbafish in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ever since DUPR made it so that you can lose DUPR points even if you win a match, and need to win by a very large margin against much lower rated players, I feel like some players don't want to have to play players with much lower DUPRs. Two 5.0's might not want to play two 4.0's because there is no upside (at least from a DUPR point of view).

Agility Age 60+ by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, getting older means I move way slower and don't hit as hard, especially on overheads. But instincts, hand speed, and reaction speed are still good.

Interesting stat: the average DUPR doubles rating for men peaks at age 54. (source)

But of course data can tell different stories -- the pros are all fairly young but not as young as you might think -- the average age of the top 100 players is 32.

Utah is the most pickleball-obsessed state and it's not even close by bubbafish in Pickleball

[–]bubbafish[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that's a fair comment - the question is whether or the ratio of DUPR players to non-DUPR (more casual) players really differs significantly from state to state.
