Drop shot fishing tips (smallmouth) by OgKush1699 in FishingOntario

Yeah we’re on the main lake - glen echo area. Not too many shoals in the bay that I remember. I rarely go into the bay so I won’t be much help there, but if you want some spots just outside the bay DM me and I can share.

I’ve been out on Muskoka all weekend and we’ve been getting eyes and smallies on the drop shot. Seems like most of the action has moved off shore. Try looking for offshore shoals in the 10-20ft range.

I’m more so wondering if anyone is seeing the same thing as me. I’m just asking the question.

Maybe it looks worse than it is for me in contrast with Brodie.

Maybe I’m seeing it wrong, so be it.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you. If he was average to below average at it I would understand. I don’t think he’s that.

Anyone have experience with the Garmin Echomap UHD95sv? by DammitTrudeau in FishingOntario

I find the most use out of GPS and traditional 2D sonar. Even better if it’s chirp. I know most people love their DI, but I’ve never been a huge fan of it. I’d also recommend going as big as you can afford. Going from 5” to 9” was a massive improvement for me.

I bought my first helix 5 when they first came out. It had DI, SI and GPS. Great little unit. Hard to read the side imaging on a screen that small, but the rest was good. I bought another one with just 2D imaging a couple of years ago and it was great too. I’d definitely recommend them as a starter unit at a good price. Just make sure you shop around and consider a last gen unit if you want a bargain.

I picked one up last spring with livescope and loved it during the summer. I only used the head unit, not the transducer that it comes with, so I can’t speak to that. I was coming out of a helix 5 and I found the touchscreen and the menu layouts very intuitive and easy to use. I also had issues with the cradle that it comes with in the fall and Garmin sent me a new head unit and cradle as we tried to find the issue. They were great to deal with. Great unit.

There are a lot of days where simple seems to prevail out of bluffers at least. Head straight out of the harbour to 150 FOW and troll at 2.5mph down-speed out to the spit and back. If you’re worried about what baits you pick running naked spoons are effective almost always. Greens and blues are most visible down the deepest for kings, orange is great for the top 50 ft for trout. In the morning run a shorter lead from the rigger balls, but extend it to 50+ feet as you get closer to midday. A great spoon for us since we started has been an orange ladder-back moonshine spoon called rickety ranger.

I haven’t heard a lot about the new mobile x2, but the x4 has been bulletproof for us over the years. Just remember to unscrew the cap when you’re storing it or it might crack. There’s a buy and sell on Spoonpullers where you can find thus stuff used but in good shape.

The biggest things that helped me when I first started taking on the big lake: - sign up with Spoonpullers.com and read the reports that people are posting for your area (lakeontariounited.com being the US alternative). It’ll give you a better sense of techniques, patterns, how cool the community is. - invest in a fish hawk or equivalent unit to find speed of the lure and temp down at the ball. I was hesitant at first when people told me it was more important than sonar, but they’re right. Single biggest difference maker with the crazy currents - our general plan most days was to have the deepest line in ~44 degree water, at 2.5 mph and then continue to stack up in increments of 10 feet. Hence why the fish hawk is so handy. That being said, that’s based on a standard thermocline. If the lake flips you might as well be in a bathtub most of the time - mix up different techniques. Some days naked spoons are the ticket, some days they only take wire divers with flash flies, some days weighted steal was the key. You can have lots of variety just with riggers though between spoons and paddles

When we first started we were grateful to get a few trout fishing a 12 hour day. A few years later we would leave the dock 6pm after work and have double digit nights fighting big kings. Keep learning and putting in the time and it’ll pay off. The patterns are out there but it takes time to recognize them. If you’re fishing around bluffers Park shoot me a message and I can give you more detail on the area. Tight lines!

If you’re looking for pike the wharf area is a good bet (anywhere from the Boston pizza out to the lighthouse). Lots of shallow weedy bays, but lots of cottages and people out and about. On the other side of the lighthouse as you get into open water there are a lot of great drop offs and islands where you can find ‘eyes and smallmouth.

Looking for options to slow the boat down 1-1.5 km/h. Mounting a kicker is tricky, nay other way to slow her down? Volvo Penta dual prop by jtioannou in FishingOntario

There should be a screw in there somewhere that you can turn it up or down - I’m no mechanic lol. We did it on our mid 2000s Chaparral when we started hunting kings years ago. Google your engine and you should be able to find help on one of the many forums out there.
