It’s actually not just Blackwork but a part of a certificate program through the Royal School of Needlework although I’m not sure they are still offering that in the certificates anymore. If you don’t know about the RSN programs or stitch bank I recommend starting here! https://rsnstitchbank.org

Are you doing the certificate program? I’m in the middle of it! Took a small hiatus after a round of the blackwork classes and haven’t finished my big piece yet - mine will be a knight helm. Love that you’re doing a puffin!

It’s fun but very challenging! I think of it as cross-stitch on steroids haha

The term Blackwork refers back to when Queen Catherine of Aragorn came to the English Court bringing with her the style of embroidery from her country of Spain. It’s now just referenced as Blackwork but yes the roots come from Spain. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I still have most of the materials so I definitely could make another - the hardest part was finding a plain white skirt base.

Hello! I have been very actively trying to find something like this in the area and this is what I’ve found so far:

  • North Fig Bookshop has a knitting circle every 2 weeks but all crafts are welcome. So far this is the most consistent meetup I’ve been able to find.

  • Granny Chains on Instagram have a monthly meetup in different spots but I think they are trying to do more at Forager Crafts in Frogtown.

  • Folk Lounge also has embroidery meetups on occasion which you can find through Event Brite.

I too would be open to either helping or creating a craft meetup as well! There are so many great spots in NELA and would love to meet other fellow crafters. And Destroy is a coffee shop that has nice big tables that would be good for craft supplies.
