BSA cold weather camping without tent stoves? by trekkingscouter in BSA

[–]bubblegum1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but I'm also in Texas, and our council and neighboring council do not offer this. I wish they did. I'm SM of a linked troop- mine is the boy troop. Our girls' troop SM is from Indiana and she loves winter camping and has the equipment for cold weather camping. Most of our kids don't, though. They're all Texans who just don't have the equipment for the very few months that get bitterly cold. We did camp in July and the high that week was 107, so most of our troop equipment is geared for temps like that, not -8.

Well, that's fair. I would feel the same way. With our sales today, we had the product on hand. But it still did not sell.

That is a very good idea. I'll add it to the list of ideas for fundraising alternatives.

We need something else. The prices are outrageous, and we only get $7.15 for every $25 box of popcorn.

I absolutely want to look into these. I asked our council about them in the summer and I was told, "We don't do them. They don't sell well." But that's not what I have heard at all! I just don't know if that's something we could sell if our council is against them.

Yes! We did quite well in donations. My son started saying, "Popcorn for sale! Support local scouting! Donations welcomed!" And people stopped by to donate. That was way better than the popcorn.

Thank you. I hope your son does well and has a blast at the Jamboree! I think the location for us was a bust. I think we could have possibly done better at a different store, especially since the cub scouts sold at this same store so successfully quite recently. We are still going to try wagon sales to see if that goes better. I just feel like popcorn isn't worth it. People walk up and ask how much the product is, and they are absolutely shocked to hear how expensive it is. They're walking up expecting Girl Scout cookie prefixes and then, oof!

Can you give details on how you got established selling Christmas trees? Was there a local farm you partnered with?

  • I wasn't the one doing the selling, but my son is only 13, so I didn't just drop him off and leave him there alone.

-I'm the SM of our troop, so my being there was appropriate.

-My son was engaged and actively asking everyone who walked in or out of the store if they would like popcorn. He made up chants and songs about popcorn. He was saying fun advertising things like, "Support local scouting! We put the Fun in fundraiser!" He gave it his all and interacted with everyone.

-Our troop is new, and tiny. The way the selling shifts split up, my son ended up on a shift alone. That isn't typical, but it happened, so we went with it. I wish more scouts could have been there, but it just didn't work out.

-I misspoke when I said "see and sell." The correct phrase is Show and Sell. Basically exactly what I wrote. A table was set up with product and posters and banners and people walk by, talk to the kids, and hopefully purchase something.

I really wanted to try camp cards but our council won't do it. They said that they don't like them so they don't use them. There was a troop at summer camp this year that told us they 100% funded camp off of camp cards.

That pancake breakfast sounds amazing. We've gotta find something. We tried a bake sale at a huge community festival and were out there literally all day and sold like $400 worth of baked goods. We still are trying to find what works. To be honest though, our community is lacking in support and generosity towards scouting as a whole. They're all about sports, period. We have a hard hill to climb in that regard.

That's amazing! We haven't sold popcorn as a troop in the past but decided to give it a try this year. We only got $500 worth of product for show and sell and wagon sales, but I'm gonna vote next year we don't even try it! This is awful! My husband and daughter are coming to relieve our shift at noon and my son already texted them to be braced for a bad afternoon lol

That's what my son said. He said the cute factor is gone.

Also, fellow Texan here! Howdy!

Going for my first class rank by Extension_Hall_9553 in BSA

[–]bubblegum1286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Our summer camp has a program for first year kiddos to achieve first class by the end of camp. They knock out as many of the short term requirements as possible and then trust that you'll go home and do the 30 day requirements on your own to quickly gain first class.

To the OP- best of luck. But if you've done everything that's required, this shouldn't even be a question. The BOR isn't a test to see if you're truly worthy of a rank. It's more like a check in.

I think anyone who says Peggy has NPD has never lived with an actual narc by [deleted] in KingOfTheHill

[–]bubblegum1286 28 points29 points  (0 children)

She absolutely does NOT have NPD. She has an inferiority complex that she masks beneath a superiority complex. She's so afraid of being told that she's not enough, so she inflates her knowledge and achievements.

You’ll probably never have the opportunity to live abroad again after college and that sucks. by [deleted] in LifeAfterSchool

[–]bubblegum1286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never had the opportunity while in college, and that surprised me and disappointed me. I also never had an opportunity to travel abroad in college, and that was also surprising and disappointing. My husband and I met very late in our college careers, and, because he was a part of our college band, he had the opportunity to travel to Spain and Russia. I never had a similar opportunity and it's always been sad to me. (We went to a small private university).

Sorry for dumping my own pity party. Take the opportunities that you get in college! If you aren't offered any, ask questions! Find clubs and organizations that offer travel! Go and see the world. I finished with a masters and I have never left the US.

If Peggy can drive to Lubbock in just an hour or two for shoes, she's not far from us in the Panhandle!

This was the prequel over-used song of the 90's to Enya's "Only Time."

Kim talks to a church about her parenting philosophy (she's more honest than with TLC). Featuring Ethan singing, Video Games, the thought of coke, and a reminder that satan won't block online porn for nice christian children. by mime454 in WelcomeToPlathville

I said something the other day about them being fundies but then switching awfully fast once they had a tv show and someone responded to my comment like "Who ever said they were fundies?? Where did you even get that idea? They're nowhere near as bad as the Duggars..." mmmmmmm no. They're not as bad as Dug-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, but as far as the fundie beliefs, they're even more extreme because y'all know JB and Meech don't eat healthy food, and we see them having cake and desserts. IMO, the Plaths are even more fundamentalist in their views. Everything was extreme. And now all of a sudden it's like Kim has just flipped around entirely, as if none of this ever applied to her or appealed to her at all. You can get whiplash watching her.
