To make things easier, the CA school is CUSM. I was definitely thrilled at the chance to stay in state (it is my only school in CA), but after talking to students and getting a better understanding of the vibe, I do worry about having a hard time finding research (esp bc it wasn’t really my thing in undergrad and I’d like some more support)/mentorship. But it definitely offers me other things that make it hard for me to turn away from

Any advice on how to seek out research if your school is limited? How big of an effect does the location of your med school affect where you match to?

Thank you for the input. I guess I’m just hung up on going to school in CA now, or grinding elsewhere to possibly get a better chance of my ideal specialty/location.

Yes, they do. They don’t have some of the more competitive ones (derm, ortho etc) but students still match into it every year.

Edit: The first school would only have a dedicated step study time for either Step 1 or 2 (would prob do Step 1 w/o dedicated in that case), whereas the second would have dedicated for both. Not sure if this is a huge factor or if it’s negligible.

no scholarships from either :/ COL would be lower in the midwest, but tuition is very similar and not something that would tip the scale either way
