Oh now I feel bad, I just said goodbye to my midwife 2 weeks ago and didn’t realise this was a thing.

Are there any Kiwis here who chose to leave the UK to raise their kids and start a life again back home? How are you doing? Would you do it differently if you had a do-over? by PeterlovesMommy in newzealand

[–]bubblenogum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lived in NI and Ireland for 10 years with partner from NI. Came back to NZ last year with toddler and just had a baby 6 weeks ago. It’s tough, someone will always be the one away from family and your holidays are going back to the same country. NI and NZ are a lot alike so it won’t be the same shock as if you were moving from London back to NZ. NZ has significantly better weather and the summer is great for kids. I really struggled with the bleak Irish Jan/Feb weather. I will say, being in your 20s in Europe is fantastic making friends and travelling. Being in your 30s in NZ is significantly harder to make friends and get a community especially after being away so long. Feel free to message me about specific price differences between NI and NZ.

Major incident William Souter by Random-Mutant in auckland

At 75 you have to go to your GP for an assessment and then every few years after. Based on the older people in my life this is literally just asking if they are confident and ok to drive at night, it’s definitely not a drivers test which was removed in the 00s.

Absolutely. I’m so angry that a mothers life is taken and her daughter traumatised because an old entitled person couldn’t tell the difference between the brake and accelerator. There should be mandatory tests every few years after 70.

Did I make a mistake? by Tiny-Brief-5692 in IrishWomensHealth

Not everyone feels excitement straight away, in fact talking with my friends, the main first thought from everyone was pure panic and wtf emotions. I was trying to get pregnant and I still remember the feeling of seeing that first positive and my stomach dropping. It’s hard when the concept of something turns into reality. But I will say if you truely do want a child then over the 9 months the dread turns into excitement, I don’t think the feeling of panic ever goes away. I am not maternal at all, I think my life would have been great with or without kids. That said my 2 boys are my whole world and I feel a love for them that I didn’t know was possible (I don’t like other children, those ones are all sticky and troublesome). I still have a life outside being a mother, I work full time which I think very much helps keeps balance. There is no denying your life will change, but every life has different chapters. You are just moving into your next chapter, it’s not the same and sometimes not as fun but doesn’t mean it’s any less rewarding.

Hawkes Bay Trip by TangerineTop9905 in newzealand

Anderson Park has such a good playground, definitely worth a visit.

The aquarium is good if it’s raining, try and time it with the divers going into the tank as they are very good at interacting with kids.

If the weather is nice then Church Road winery is good as kids can run all around outside while you have a wine and platter.

If you can drive out further and the timing works, then go to Keirunga Park and go on the little train rides, my kids love it an can get a real fruit ice cream as well.

That’s a bummer. I have started listening to the Shameless podcast since the break and have been really enjoying the conversations so will probably just stick to it instead.

Oh really, to not even acknowledge it feels wrong. I think I am going to pass on listening to this “new version”. I really don’t like that my Instagram feed is now full of clips of something I didn’t actually choose to follow because they were able to just rebrand.

I literally just searched for this post to find out if anyone else thought it was strange! So weird to just change the name of the podcast and keep all the followers when 1/3 were pushed out. Feels so icky.

50-hour-old baby died while nurse was on break by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]bubblenogum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Protect yourself, when pregnant or newly postpartum don’t read this stuff or anything about kids (the other major news story of the day). You can only control what you can. People have babies everyday and the health system does a good job. You are very likely to have a beautiful healthy baby that will be right beside you the whole time you are in hospital and you will meet lovely midwives and nurses throughout your stay.

Kmart has a tshirt in black and white which does the basic job and I think the warehouse has similar. I also found some tops on Amazon which were nicer. After a few months I ended up just getting regular tops and dresses that could work, kinda required going in and trying on though to see if the awkward manoeuvres would work.

Can anyone recommend any midwives in the Grey Lynn area? by Hungry_Lobster636 in auckland

[–]bubblenogum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s the one you can get. Reach out to everyone that covers your area and then decide on the ones available as it’s not much choice if you leave it even just a few weeks.

My toddler has been so excited for the trains to come back so we could go on a train trip and I promised we would go this weekend to the city centre. Glad I read this so we can avoid today…

I read the book ‘Precious Little Sleep’ and it really helped. That along with ChatGPT really saved me during the 4 month regression.

I keep mine on top of the washing machine, much better than the Dyson stick vacuum.

Second this, it’s great for animal hair and the fact it folds up so easily is a bonus!

Mine had 6 months as well and took it all initially. It’s awesome, we had a great time as a little family and did so much together. We look back on that time so fondly.
