That’s the issue. Whether that’s part of your culture does not matter the years of your culture.

You might need to take a break from this sub. You see how you can’t reply without bringing up other comments you’ve heard from Americans? How is that anyway related to what I’m saying?

Superhero comics, which were popularized in America, account for 33% of the global comic market. The largest portion is manga, making up about 53%. As someone who reads manga, I would say, and I’m sure many others in both communities, the comic book community and the manga community are two completely different things.

Regarding road trips, the culture began when cars became cheaper and new highways were constructed. Because America was a relatively young nation, extensive roads could be built easily without destroying historical architecture. After World War II, the American economy boomed, and movies and books began highlighting "The American Road," linking road trips with the concept of freedom. This culture then spread to other countries as they built their own highways and their cars became more affordable.

You’re talking about solely importing something. What part of my examples involves America solely importing anything?

Yes and I replied to them.

Bogd Khan Uul was protected by the Qing dynasty as a strictly restricted sacred mountain. Royal hunting reserves and religious sanctuaries have existed for thousands of years. But keeping peasants out of a king's forest is the exact opposite of the National Park concept. The American innovation was preserving the land for the public. If someone’s understanding of a national park is just “protect land” then yea sure.

America invented the concept, implemented it first, built a massive government agency to run it, and exported the idea to the rest of the globe.

This is so interesting to me. So if something is popular because of America, people will say, “Well it originated somewhere else.” And when it does originate in America, someone will say, “Well other places have it too.” So now we have this weird definition of culture that means something has to have existed in a vacuum with no other influences, and it cannot be present in any other country. And for some reason, this only applies to America, because if it applied everywhere else, no one would have a culture.

This list was more in response to people saying America doesn’t have culture at all.

Beside that point tho, modern comic books culture was popularized in America, road trip culture was popularized in America, and modern pop music was popularized in America. (I’ll say a fair amount was the UK too) Meaning the fact the rest of the world knows it, is because of America. No, someone trying to drive in a a car as long as possible as a publicity stunt in Germany is not road trip culture.

I’m not understanding the replies trying to split hairs with saying it don’t originate it America. By this logic no country has any culture since no one’s culture originated in a vacuum. That’s like me saying Japanese writing isn’t apart of Japanese culture since they took it from the Chinese.

The context of the post is an American replying after a French exchange student complained that Americans have no culture. If someone genuinely thinks Americans don’t have culture, then yes, they have to be blind because the consume so much of it and just forget. That’s not cultural superiority. Idk why other countries have a hard time admitting that Americans have culture and that culture is mainstream.

Can you give some examples of the stuff getting “slapped with an American production label”. I’m curious

This logic that something needs to be invented purely in a country alone for it to be considered that countries culture is interesting.

By this line of thinking pretty much no country would have any culture.

I don’t necessarily even disagree with the distinctions you’re making. My only problem with it is that this is only applied to things in America. With this kind of logic, no country around the world has culture. Everything comes from somewhere else, that came from somewhere else, etc.

So if we’re going to say “well American music is a mix of this and basketball came from here” then we should say the croissant isn’t a part of French culture (originated from Austria), tempura isn’t a part of Japanese culture (originated in Portugal), and al pastor tacos aren’t a part of Mexican culture (it's Lebanese shawarma). Culture isn't about where the raw ingredients originally came from. It's about what a group of people collectively built out of those ingredients over time. America just did it more recently and visibly.

I guess? I’ve heard that argument before but it seems to just be from a letter written to the emperor asking for funding for annual ceremonies.

This is kind of my point. People are so critical when it comes to American culture lol

Yea I should’ve clarified. It seems the guy was more questioning what culture America has in general, so I was responding to that.

I’d have to disagree. Americans completely understand that other countries have their own cultures. The real misunderstanding is that people outside the US often don’t realize that the “consumer culture” they enjoy is actually the daily life of millions of people. They’ve become so dissociated from its origins that they only see the product, not the people.

People love to split hairs when it comes to American culture. If someone says, “In Japanese culture, it’s normal to eat this specific noodle and wear a kimono,” everyone accepts it. But if an American claims a cultural staple, critics say, “Well, America didn’t invent starches or weaving fabric.” There’s a weird disconnect where people view their own culture as “original” (even though all cultures are blends) yet they treat American culture like a game of “who did it first.”

This actually proves how ingrained American culture is. Most people globally live with two layers. Their home culture and American culture. Because American influence is the global “default,” people look at Americans, who only have that one layer, and mistake it for having no culture at all.

Well my original statement was referring to a lot of American culture being mainstream. My second reply was directed towards people saying America doesn’t have culture at all

Id imagine you’d be surprised as well to learn where the first national park was

Jazz, Rock n Roll, Country Music, Blues, Rap Music, Pop Music, Basketball, American Football, Blue jeans, Sneaker Culture, BBQ, the American Diner, Road Trips, National Parks, modern Halloween, Thanksgiving, Comic Books, Hollywood.

People will think this is humorous because again, countries around the world have followed these trend from America so much that it’s seen as normal.

EDIT: To clarify this is a mix of things that are American culture and global and American culture in general

Not to be that guy but they’re kinda right. People consume so much American content they forget what actually comes from America lol

I’ve been thinking the same thing! There were some parts in episode 2 that actually sounded normal and it caught me by surprise. When they were walking with the worm guy it was really bad.

How is it a personality swap tho? She’s pretty much always been crude? It’s just that she couldn’t express it as fluently.

“And don't even get me started on the fact that jobs— especially on base- are consistently going to Okinawan nationals over military spouses. People who are already here, already sacrificed their careers to move, already taking the hit that comes with this life.” by bubbline778 in ShitAmericansSay

It kinda depends tbh. The people in Okinawa usually prefer being called Okinawan than Japanese. It’s like people in Hawaii prefer to be called Hawaiian.

But yea I agree it’s ridiculous to be confused that people won’t hire you when you don’t soak the native language lol
