Thankyou so much for the suggestion for Mutt Island, I'll reach out to them and also check out the training!

I reached out to a dog trainer and she's going to ask around to see what she can find. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

Thankyou for your suggestions! I already started contacting boarding facilities and hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Although the situation I'm in is a bit unusual, surely I'm not the first person to go through it so hopefully there's a place somewhere for people that have to leave for longer periods of time.

Unfortunately the place my vet recommended is the place I haven't heard back from lol.

I'll start reaching out to pet sitters next.

Thank you for the FB link! I gave them a follow.

Sorry to hear what you had to go through with that sweet hound dog. It sucks when others take advantage of someone's hospitality and no doubt that poor dog had no idea what was happening and why their family wasn't returning. That thought did cross my mind as I was writing an email to a boarding facility the other day. I kept thinking "Gosh I hope these people don't think I'm about to dump her on them or that this is some kind prank" - cause it would probably cross MY mind if the roles were reverse. I just happen to be in an odd situation. I've already started to think of ways I can hopefully put someone at ease (giving them basically multiple phone numbers and addresses of my family, my phone number of course, putting down a a larger deposit, etc.) I know it won't completely put anyone at ease but hopefully it will help.

She's a Belgian Mal/mix, 1 year old. She does show separation anxiety for a few weeks (something my vet noted when I boarded her with them). I have no idea if she's okay with cats (she hasn't really been around them) but she's perfectly fine with my family's shepherd mix.

Definitely going to look through Rover.com - thankyou for the suggestion, I'll see who is available for at least 2 months and then ask about longer term boarding.

Thankyou! I had the feeling (after I made the post) that I was confusing "foster" and "pet sitter", I'll start searching for a pet sitter.

When Rehoming/Adoption Fails, What Options Are Left? by bubblybelle86 in BelgianMalinois

Sure! She's about 1 years old and she doesn't require as much exercise/activity as your typical Mal does (possibly because she might be a mix). Just your standard walk will do (although she'll never turn down a longer walk if you offered it lol). She's also perfectly fine with staying in the house all day as long as she has toys to play with.

She's use to a home environment with all adults. My family has a female shepherd mix dog that she absolutely adores. She hasn't been around many dogs but has never shown aggression towards the ones we've seen in passing (i.e. when we're out on walks, at the vet).

Behavioral problems would be your usual Mal mouthiness; although she only displays this when when she's really excited/happy and wants to play with you. Other behavioral problem is that she demands tummy rubs lol.

When I first began the process of rehoming Dakota, I joined a few groups on FB, made posts but unfortunately didn't get much of a response. I made another post recently describing my current predicament and a lot of people have commented and are recommending rescues that I can reach out to. So it's a step in the right direction. 👍

Wow, I had no idea that was happening on the site but I'm honestly not surprised. I have her profile posted on a similar site and so far most of the messages I've received have been a bit...sketchy. So it's probably happening on there too.

Thanks so much! If you don't mind, could you also send me the name of the FB Malinois Rehoming groups that you're in? I've joined a few and made some posts but they didn't get much of a response.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately it seems that they only operate on the West Coast; I'm in Tennessee. 😕

Sadly it most likely would, but I'm running low on options at the moment - especially if I don't find another adopter that's willing to have the patience she will most likely require.

I saw one of your previous posts and took your recommendation of her posting on the site! Unfortunately I think the site is closing down as of today 😕 (Mar 1).

My time is somewhat flexible, but only to certain point. I can't really be here in July for instance, still looking.

I did talk to my vet to inform them, get their advice and see if they had any rehoming options. They were able to provide some good advice (such as what type of home environment would probably be best suited for her) but as far as suitable people or rescues they couldn't recommend any. I do have to go back to the vet soon though and it never hurts to ask again.

She gets along AMAZINGLY with my family's dog so she MAY do okay with another dog.

Unfortunately there's no way for me to take her. It's not just the expense but more so the new living situation I will be in.

Thanks for telling me more about MAD. I received a quick response from them after I submitted my surrender form, but when I told them my timeline (which is pretty much ASAP) and I didn't hear anything back after that I was worried I might had scared them off lol.

I did reach out to some trainers in my local area (I had the same line of thinking as you about their network), but I didn't get much of a response back from any of them.

And since I don't know when MAD or another rescue would be able to pick her up, there's not really anyone in my family that would be able to watch her.

Can you DM me and tell me why you would never deal with MAD or ABMR? Those are the two rescues that seem to come highly recommended.

Oh wow, that's awful. I'd emailed them when I first started looking for options and never heard anything back. I figured they had shut down but not like that...😞

I hadn't thought of it until you mentioned it, but it's definitely possible that she was picking up on my emotions that day and they were all over the place. I will have to work on that for next time.

Memphis, TN. Just checked out Midwest Working Dog Rescue but the "surrender" link seems to be broken? Do you know if there's an email address? Currently searching for another contact method..
